Welcome to Regent News

Dear families,

Thank you for the great start to the term. As a Christian staff, we also thank God for his hand in guiding and sustaining all that we set out to achieve. 2016 really looks set to be a great year; with your support, we look forward to a focus on learning and increasing opportunities for students.

'The Primary school classroom is characterised by enthusiasm and inspiration, collaboration and engagement, curiosity and discovery.' Charter on Primary Schooling, Australian Primary Principals Association.*

At Regent College we increasingly hope that this would be the learning environment that your child would experience and enjoy.

Yours sincerely,

Derek Nicholls

Principal

Whatever you are.

The children in Kindergarten 1 have been engaged in learning more about themselves and each other. Come into the classroom and you will see our foil family portraits; as well as, a pretty fabulous self- portrait display. Outside, we are constantly reminded by the children that it doesn’t matter what you are; you are welcome to play. This includes all four, six and eight legged creatures!

Sorting things.

The Kindergarten 2 students have been focusing on mathematical skills by sorting things out according to different attributes, as well as perfecting their one-to-one correspondence skills when counting. They have also been strengthening their fine and gross motor skills through various learning centres and during their outdoor learning sessions. They thoroughly enjoyed their very first buddy reading experience, which left a lasting impression on the kindergarten students!

There's always time for dressing up!

This week in Pre-Primary we have been continuing our study of fairy tale families. We have discussed things that are real and things that are not real in these tales. Most recently we have focused on Little Red Riding Hood. The children have enjoyed retelling the story, exploring in the forest and dressing up as the central character. We also explored A Red Riding Hood story from China!!

Numbers through play.

Classes 1.1 and 1.2 have been exploring Numbers through play, which includes playing games, using our interactive Smartboard and through hands-on experiences.

Since Term One commenced, we have been reading and representing number using cubes, dominoes and dice. We have been counting  forwards and backwards to 20, adding and ordering groups of objects. It has been encouraging to see our prior learning from Pre-primary being used as a platform for our growth into Year One Mathematics! We are still learning to find the right page numbers in our text books and to rule up properly, but this is just one part of our exciting school journey. Over the next couple of weeks we will be exploring subtraction, analogue and digital time, one half, 2D and 3D shapes.

It's raining!

Okay, you're right, it's not been raining; however, the Year 2 students have been simulating rain (water in a cup with holes) to observe what happens when it falls on different surfaces. This week, under the expert guidance of our Year 2 lead scientist with his whistle, camera and white coat, the remaining scientists enjoyed recording what occurred through a series of investigations.

Year 2/3 snapshot.

This fortnight the Year 2 students enjoyed learning about measuring mass. They used their hands to “heft” two objects to estimate which one is heavier. Our class ran the week 3 school assembly and presented an item encouraging students to be Sun Smart. The students sang the “Slip, slop, slap, seek and slide” song, accompanied on screen by Sid the seagull. In the Year 3 Science lesson, students are presently conducting an experiment to discover if plants can move like a living thing.

A birds eye view.

Our 3.1 class assembly this week was about crows.   Crows are very talented birds and show great perseverance and initiative.   We taught the school some very interesting facts about crows. In Mathematics we have been learning about symmetry!   We had some fun completing some art work showing symmetry and will be writing stories about our interesting pictures next week. Finally, this week had a cool start, but our final swimming lessons were completed in beautiful weather!

A not so long walk.

The Year 4’s, along with Mrs Johnston, Mr Nicholls and several Super Mums, enjoyed their walk along the Swan River foreshore on Friday, to discover any obvious impact on the environment from natural processes and human activity.  They photographically recorded physical and chemical erosion in progress; buildings and other structures; introduced tree species; birds; transport systems and workmen with their equipment.  Using City of South Perth’s historical photographs and information on their history piers along the path (Picture South Perth), the students also discovered the earlier existence of a dairy farm, racecourse, polo field and ferry terminal.  Before returning to school the Year 4’s shared lunch and enjoyed some free time on the Hurlingham Street playground.  There were some weary legs at the end of the day but valuable seeds have been sown to continue learning in History and Science over the next few weeks. A great deal of thanks goes to the mums who came along to help.  We could not possibly have achieved such a fabulous outcome without your assistance. Mrs Johnston and the Year 4’s are truly grateful!

Junkadelic

The Year 5/6 class this term for River Rangers is focusing on recycling and creatively reusing our unwanted goods. To highlight this they will be completing an art project with the helping hand of Junkadelic (Junk art experts). We look forward to see what they will create in the coming weeks!

Beautiful faces

The Year 2 and Year 2/3 students have been making Carnevale masks in relation to the festival of Carnevale, celebrated in Venice a couple of weeks ago. Besides the fun and creativity of making the masks, the children will now focus on the language they will use to describe their mask. The students will have to listen to questions asked in Italian and then read sentences in Italian to indicate if they used  stars, sequins, feathers and which colours to decorate their mask.
