Delta Magic!

Sequoia had another very successful cruise out to the Delta. Dan and Sue Lockwood put on a relaxing and fun filled week.
Many Sequoia members make this annual pilgrimage to enjoy the special Delta atmosphere where time stands still, the air is warm to hot, the water is fresh and you can just while away a few days to recharge the batteries, have a lot of fun and enjoy the company of your Sequoia friends.
The Delta YC is very hospitable and you also get the trappings of modest civilization with showers and heads plus a great BBQ area and lots of lawn space for pitch and putt plus bocce ball.
There was a great party on Wednesday night , hosted by the Oakland Yacht Club with the theme of Gilligan's Island. It made for a hilarious and marvelous evening. Dan brought in a special guest speaker, Carol A. Jensen, author of many books on the area including the Delta.
Dan had two lasers brought up specially to amuse folks - great fun for adults and kids to sail in the estuary. Thanks to Rick Dalton and Dan Doud for managing the transport of the lasers.
There was dinghy racing - an annual competition where the Sequoia team just beat out the Oakland team, for the second year in a row.
And, there was the high stress floating competition - with a ring tube to see who got past the boats in the current while sipping a beer! Prize for winning - well you got to try it again, with of course, another beer!
Plus just lots of fun memories and shared stories. For those who have not been up there we have already lined up the dates for next year. (July 28 through August 1, 2014). It will be great.
Dan and Sue - thanks for all your hard work making this week a fantastic success for all the happy cruisers.

We had a great visit from Anita Giari (Commodore 2002) and friends last weekend. Lots of folks came by the club to have a very pleasant cocktail hour with Anita and celebrate some great memories of her as Commodore. Sheila Jones took this photo of some past and present Commodores. Anita - we would love to see you more often!

Sequoia Conquers the South of France
The above headline from this weeks Chartering section in Latitude 38 says it all! They printed the whole article and it makes an outstanding read and testimony to what a great club we have. Thanks to Tim Peterson for doing such a good job of getting our name in all the right places this year. We have had beer can articles, racing articles and now a cruising article. Outstanding!

On Saturday August 10th, Luna Rossa Challenge defeated Artemis Racing Team in a 4-0 sweep of the LVC Semifinals. Luna Rossa Challenge will now advance to the Finals along with Emirates Team New Zealand with scheduled double header races on Saturday August 17th. The Finals are a best 7 of 13 race schedule and will no doubt be grueling on both teams as most of the race days are double headers. The winner of these two teams will advance to the Americas' Cup and race against Oracle Team USA. See the link below for daily race schedules. Also from left to right in the attached photo, Linda Mendez-Dalton, Helmsperson, Grinder and Jib Trimmer on Iowa, Christopher Draper, Helmsman and 2004 49er Bronze Medalist on Luna Rossa Challenge AC72 and Rachel Martinez, Helmsperson, Tactician, Navigator and Foredeck on Yellow Brick Road.

Calendar Planning Meeting - August 23
I have had several members approach me to request that we start our 2014 calendar planning earlier this year. This would allow us to invite other clubs to cruise-in to our great Club and help to lock in cruise-out dates with other clubs and marinas.
We have a drop-in-dinner (DID) scheduled on August 23rd and we will get together after the meal to start the process of setting our calendar for 2014. Any and all are welcome to help us set our 2014 social and racing calendar.
if you can't attend and you have any ideas or special dates we should consider please contact me and let me know your input.

8th Annual Hannig Cup Race - August 28th
|
|
|
Wed Aug 28 18:00
We have contributed over $1 million to local charities. This year we sorely miss Kristin Butler who was our guardian angel/worker for many years. This year's schedule conflicts also likely will preclude our past celebrity guests but will allow us to focus on a key charity cause: Floating Doctors.
There will be a great dinner provided by the Sea Scouts.
There is a $100 donation to youth sailing for every boat racing up to $5,000. Get your boat out there!!!
Thanks Rick Dalton for helping make this happen!!!
More information coming soon!

Half Moon Bay Cruise Out
Join us for our annual blue water cruise-out over Labor Day weekend. The plan is:
Friday 8/30:
make your way up the Bay somewhere with your boat, preferably in the early afternoon with the ebb. Metridium will likely anchor at Aquatic Park, but we don't raft up at Aquatic Park. Or wait and leave Redwood City Saturday morning. 1kt ebb peaks at 1pm at the San Mateo Bridge.
Saturday 8/31:
meet up just outside Aquatic Park at noon, if you'd like to catch the start of the ebb out the Gate and travel in loose convoy. Or meet us in Half Moon Bay. If it happens to be foggy, arrange a "radar or AIS buddy". Anchor in Half Moon Bay, relax for the afternoon, then enjoy cocktails, appetizers and a potluck dinner on the rafted boats. A dinghy with an outboard will be useful.
Sunday 9/1:
Dinner out, probably at Flavor
http://www.flavoronthecoast.com
Monday 9/2:
leave Half Moon Bay around 8am to catch the flood at the gate until 1pm, then sail back to Redwood City.
Let us know if you'd like to join us, either by boat or blacktop, and how many would like to go out to dinner Sunday night.

It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that Dick passed away last Saturday. He was a wonderful man and we shall miss him.
As you probably know he joined Sequoia from Palo Alto YC where he had been a member for a number of years as well as Commodore of that club.
I talked to Barbara and they decided on a small family gathering as best for them and prefer not to have a memorial at the club. They know we are here to help in any way. They also appreciate and know our thoughts and prayers are with her and their family.
Barbara did say she planned on still coming to the Club.
We shall do 8 Bells for Dick at the next General Meeting in early September.
Here's to our memories of Dick - a very fine man and great club member
