Saving a Prince in Egypt

In 2008, the New York Times reported a study conducted by researchers in Tokyo who discovered that “a mother’s impulse to love and protect her child may be hard-wired in her brain.” The brain patterns of 13 mothers were studied when they saw their baby smiling, and then in distress using magnetic resonance imaging (M.R.I.). The scans showed a marked difference in the women’s brain patterns when they watched their child compared to another infant. Researchers also noticed distinct changes in brain scans when the mother’s infant cried. This led to the conclusion that a mother’s response to her child in distress is biological. more
