Fleet Week and Berkeley YC Cruise Out
Beautiful Indian-summer weather and Fleet Week make for a great cruise-out! For the first time in my memory, Sequoia Yacht Club cruised up to the Berkeley Yacht Club. The cruise-out organizer for Fleet Week was Helen Horn. I know these events can be challenging, but Helen did an excellent job! She arranged for us to have free dock space on the BYC guest dock and BYC were very helpful and welcoming to us. (We do share the fact that we are both celebrating our 75th anniversary as we were both established in 1939.)
|
|
On Saturday, we all had a nice motor/sail up the Bay under very warm and sunny skies and once arriving we wandered across the street to view the Blue Angels with a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge plus hundreds of boats on the San Francisco Bay. Afterwards we all got together and shared drinks and appetizers before catching another drink while watching the sunset from the bar at the Berkeley Yacht Club. Next, we were off for dinner that Helen had arranged at Skates, an excellent restaurant on the water and only a short walk from the Club. In the morning we were invited to enjoy a great waffle breakfast at the BYC before we set off for a beautiful downwind, sail while riding the flood all the way home.
Again Helen, thanks for your efforts and thanks for making this another memorable Sequoia Yacht Club cruise-out.

Soda Can Wrap Up
Ahoy Sequoia, Ahoy Soda Caners,
We have an exciting year behind us. We went back to the roots and dug out our dinghy sailing skills again. Together we ran 12 exciting Soda Can events with over 20 people participating. We saw everything this summer - tight racing, fair sportsmanship, capsizes, 20+ knots of wind and some great sunsets. I can look back and say this has been a great summer for this club and the dinghy fleet!
I would like to thank all those ones who made it down to the ramp and took the time to participate and race. Furthermore I would like to thank the Board for it's support and belief in the series and the event format.
Last but not least I would like to thank Phillip Meredith, Hans Spanjarrt and Junior Sailing who put a lot of time and passion into this event.
But what would be a series without some results? We had tight racing and good competition but at the end Evelyn Hull took first, followed by Phillip Meredith and third Tracy Rogers.
Please find the detailed race results HERE
We are planning to continue the series and will keep you posted on future dates.
Please enjoy a little video of the racing HERE. (Video Courtesy: Mike Reed)

Take A Trip, Help The Juniors!
Our Junior Sailing program has been offered 2, Lido 14 club boats in excellent condition to use for the advanced junior sailing class. They are located in Orange County ( south of LA) and we need help in getting them up here.
Click HERE to see a blurb describing the boats.
Think of all the fun of travelling to sunny Southern California! People pay real money to visit Orange County. OK, ...well think of the grateful kids who will be able to make good use of these fine little boats. Surely we have a couple of members with enough time on their hands to help out with this rewarding chore.
If you can help, please contact Fadi Maamari via email by clicking HERE or look him up in the roster and give him a call.

Port To Begin Dredging Channel This Monday
|
|
| |
The Army Corps of Engineers dredging contractor, R.E. Staite Engineering, will start mobilizing equipment and start dredging on Monday, October 20, 2014. They will start dredging where the Channel begins out in the Bay and work in towards the Port. They will finish opposite Wharf 4, where the 3 Sea Scout boats are berthed. They expect to finish by early December. It will not be possible to know in advance where in the Channel they will be working at any given time.
The contractor will have two dredging rigs working 24/7. The material will be dredged by clamshells and placed in barges (scows). Tugboats will take the barges to the approved site for depositing the material in Bay near Alcatraz Island. The dredging rigs will be lighted and there will be navigation lights on all barges, tugs, buoys, and other equipment. R.E. Staite was informed that small boats, rowing shells, etc. are in the Channel when it is dark in the morning/evening usually with bow lights only. R.E. Staite requested that ALL BOATS STAY AT LEAST 50 FEET AWAY FROM BARGES AND OTHER EQUIPMENT.
Crew boats will be going to/from the dredging rigs and the public agency launch ramp dock near the Sea Scout boats at Wharf 4. They have been requested to maintain a "safe wake" for small boats and to be aware of their location in the Channel.
This information and any updates on the Channel maintenance dredging project will be posted on the Port of Redwood City website: redwoodcityport.com
Please contact the Port of Redwood City if you need any additional information.
