SOUNZ news November 2015

The year of celebrating the centenary of Douglas Lilburn’s birth is coming to an end, but the celebratory events continue. SOUNZ was involved in a few that took place recently and now you can view the results on our website.

Stroma: Nine Echoes
Chamber ensemble Stroma presented a tribute concert to Douglas Lilburn on the day of his 100th birthday. Nine Echoes featured nine new works by NZ composers, each responding to one of Lilburn's Nine Short Pieces for piano. SOUNZ, as an event partner, filmed the concert (available for viewing next year) and interviewed the nine composers. SOUNZ also provided the celebratory cake, which was enjoyed after the concert.

NZTrio Composing Competition Winners' Concert
Earlier this year the NZTrio invited entries for their inaugural Competition from composition students around the country, to write works referencing, or responding to, Lilburn's life and work. SOUNZ filmed the Wellington concert and you can watch it and a documentary about the project here.

Lilburn: Piano Music
Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music presented a concert of Lilburn's piano music in July. Head of Piano Studies, Jian Liu, was joined by Gillian Bibby, Richard Mapp and NZSM students for an eight work survey of this distinctive repertoire.

NZ music premieres

Don't miss the album release concert by Norman Meehan and Hannah Griffen: Small Holes in the Silence, songs based on works of NZ poets, 13 November.

Capital Choir, presents Shakey Places, a song cycle of fourteen NZ poems, composed by Felicia Edgecombe, on 15 November. The score is now available to purchase from SOUNZ.

Also on 15 November, Jade at the Pah presents the premiere of Peter Scholes's String Quartet No. 1.

653 Days, A Retrospective Concert of Music by Jeremy Mayall, on 15 November, marks the end of his tenure as University of Otago’s Mozart Fellow, and includes several world premiere performances.

On 5 December, Melting Furniture, a piano concerto by Karlo Margetić, will be premiered by Orchestra Wellington, with Michael Houstoun on piano.

NZ On Air, funder of SOUNZ’s Resound project, has appointed David Ridler as the new Head of Music and Radio. He will start with NZ On Air in February next year, succeeding Brendan Smyth, who is retiring.

NZSO Todd Corporation Young Composers Award
Already in its eleventh year, the composer residency will take place in Wellington in December, with conductor Richard Gill and composer/ mentor Michael Norris. The selected participants, whose works will be recorded by the orchestra, are listed on the NZSO website.

Opportunities

There is still time to apply for Creative New Zealand/Jack C. Richards Composer-in-Residence 2016-17 at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University of Wellington. Applications close on 27 November.

Chamber Music New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest from chamber groups to perform as part of the 2017 Encompass Regional Tours series. Apply here by 30 November and if you need some inspiration for NZ repertoire, SOUNZ is the place to go to…

APRA AMCOS have announced a brand new award for APRA Best Jazz Composition. The inaugural award will be presented in conjunction with Recorded Music New Zealand's Best Jazz Album award at the National Jazz Festival next year. Entries close 11 December.
