Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

What fun social events we had last weekend!  Rick and Petra Gilmore hatched the genius idea of an evening sail for our members and had a good sign-up.  I understand a couple of sailboats and a powerboat went out and fun was had.  A new member came up to me afterwards and commented that it was the first time she had been on a sailboat!  Bravo!  Thank you to all who participated!

But that was just the start.  We had a great Drop In Dinner and later a presentation by Chris and Michele Hartman (photo right) of their trip to the Antarctic.  The photos were beautiful and I received many comments as to the quality of the presentation.

As icing on the cake several past commodores including Anita Gianni, her husband Ron Feldman (photo left), Jim and Mary Humphries and John and Julie Mangney were in attendance.  Those faces took me back a few years and reminded me that our club is a large extended family and a place of terrific memories.

But, onward we go to upcoming events:

By the time you read this the Hannig Cup will be in the bag and our galley and floor restoration project will re-commence.  Your patience and flexibility with this process will be appreciated and in return we will move as quickly as possible to get it done!

On Friday, September 12th we will have a General Meeting and Drop In Dinner.   I invite you to come enjoy dinner and hear a number of first and second readings.

Over the weekend of September 20th Sequoia will be contesting the Barth Race with Coyote Point.  On Friday there will be a dinner at Coyote Point and on Saturday, after we have triumphed and retained the DeWitt painting in our dining room, we will have the Western BBQ.  The BBQ, all the fixins and the band are not to be missed.

On that same weekend we will be participating in the Coastal Cleanup.

September 27th is Oktoberfest at Sequoia.   This is one of our most popular events and I will have more details as they emerge.

See you around the club.

Summer Series #4

The beautiful South Bay weather surprised by going more North than first forecast. The fleet started with a light 7 knots, increasing as high as 18 true with mostly flat water and just a little ebb chop near the end of racing. Racing started at Sequoia "Y" mark and racers say they are happy with this change.

First: Daredevil, Tim Anto; Second: Pizote, Noel Bird; Third: Frequent Flyer, Stan Phillips.

In the non-spinnaker division, First went to Ohana, Dan Lockwood; and Second to Iowa, Rick Dalton.

Congratulations to Daredevil, for clinching first in the Summer Series after 4 out of the 5 races and to Frequent Flyer, for taking second in the series . In the non-spinnaker division, congratulations to Ohana, for wrapping up first for the series and to Iowa, for second.

Use of tracking software by RaceQs is now well established. Please share your track with all; it is so cool to see one's competitors battling on the course.

Elapsed times ranged from 1.5 hours to about 2 hours and this on-the-water time seems about right. If you are looking for something different, please let me know.

Scuttlebutt: I am told that Mark Finot and Stephen Gonzalez brought their Open 5.70s 10 minutes late to the start line and after more than 1-1/2 hours finished within 24 seconds of each other. Watching the action on the water were Charley Watt in his new and fast Open 6.50, Anja and Peter on Head Rush, and Billy Wheatley on his Express 27.

There is one race left in the Summer Series on September 27.

Racers can find results shortly after racing on Jibeset; the Club website takes a little longer. Try the following link:  https://www.jibeset.net/show.php?RR=SEQYC_T006541225&DOC=r4&TYP=html

Big Fun at Friday's Evening Casual Sail

Twenty fun loving sailors took advantage of a nice breeze and warm sunny weather to enjoy an afterwork casual sail before Friday's DID. Everyone took a turn at the wheel as we decompressed from our work week and socialized with our Sequoia friends. Thank you to the Skippers of Nano-Tug, Metridium and Mirth for volunteering the use of there boats for this fun event. See the photos below.

Sequoia Summertime in the San Juans

We had a fabulous time on the San Juan Island cruise with 7 boats and 36 people cruising the beautiful San Juan and Gulf Islands. The weather was perfect with several days of good sailing weather. David Bliven did an excellent job of setting up the itinerary as we alternated between mooring out and in slips every other night. We spent a couple of nights in Canada and it was good experiences clearing customs both in Canada and the US. Some of us got to see an Orca or two as we sailed along. Breathtaking! We even caught and ate some Dungeness crab. We had several nice dinners together, including our final night at the San Juan Island Yacht Club.

We will have a slideshow in the future during a DID to share our great trip with you. For now, check below for a few pictures of this memorable Sequoia Yacht Club adventure.
