Mental health in spotlightHealthway and WAM are raising awareness about positive mental health and reducing stimga around mental illness in the music industry. Over the next two years, Healthway will provide $280,000 to WAM to continue to deliver the Act-Belong-Commit mental health message through The New Noise Program, WAM Festival and the recent Song of the Year competition. This year saw a new award category dedicated to songs that promoted mental health. Find out more. Image credit: UWA Increasing kids' physical skillsHealthway has funded UWA's KIDDO program to help develop young children's skills and confidence to participate in physical activity. The program includes resources and training courses for schools, teachers, parents and early childhood educators, and opportunities for children to transition from the program into local sporting programs. E-cigarette users warningA Healthway funded study conducted by Curtin University has found that three in five Australian young adults who currently use e-cigarettes are likely to initiate tobacco cigarette smoking in the next six months. Image credit: Richard Polden Pursuing the love of musicThrough Musica Viva Australia and Healthway's partnership, students from targeted schools are benefiting from the joy of learning about music through a new music education program with instruments donated by the community. We've also developed a fun activity booklet to help students learn how to keep mentally healthy. Find out more. Footy players check on a mateLast month, the WA Country Football League in partnership with Healthway hosted a 'Think Mental Health Round', which included 'Check on a Mate' barbecues to help raise awareness that mental health issues can affect anyone. We also developed a resource guide to help players understand how to recognise signs of mental health issues and where to get help. Find out more.
Dinner plate showing portion sizes Food campaign growsHealthway continues to support Gymnastics WA's Superhero Food Campaign and has developed new resources to promote and engage children in healthy eating. This includes Facebook videos featuring the Superheros and educational games used at competitions and club events. Dinner plates showing portion sizes have also been made to eliminate confusion around serving sizes for children. View the videos here. Empowering refugee womenHealthway will fund over three years, EMPOWER, a Curtin University led program, which will help identify the strengths and skills refugee and migrant women need to achieve employment when resetting in Australia. The program aims to prevent social isolation and improve mental health. Find out more.
