Finance and Administration June Newsletter

Message from Duane McNair, VP Finance and Administration

Happy Carleton Appreciation Day everyone. I want to thank all Finance and Administration staff for your hard work over the last year in serving our campus community. I hope that you get a chance to connect with your colleagues from across campus to participate in Appreciation Day festivities that are planned from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today (June 25) in Alumni Park (located behind Pigiarvik) and in Oxbow Park (located beside the Nesbitt Building). Another way you can express your appreciation is by sending an electronic Service Excellence Thank You.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Campus Safety Special Constables who played a critical role in saving the life of a Carleton employee in late May who suffered heart attack and collapsed while walking on campus. The Special Constables were the first to arrive on the scene, quickly initiated CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED). Their prompt actions were a part of a co-ordinated response with the Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Fire Services, and Ottawa Police Service. As a result, the Carleton employee was resuscitated and taken to the hospital where they received emergency care. The employee is currently on the road to recovery at home.

With July just around the corner, I hope you have the opportunity to take a break and enjoy some time off during the summer. There will be no July newsletter, so I look forward to reconnecting and sharing news with you in August.

Sincerely,

Duane

Carleton earns Bronze at National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS)

Carleton was recently awarded Bronze in the Renovation of the Year category by the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) for the Teraanga Commons Dining Room renovations.

The submission noted:

Facilities, Management and Planning was instrumental in providing the required labour and expertise to help the renovation hit its goals related to construction and sustainability. FMP’s role involved reconciling the newly renovated Dining Hall’s impact with the generative capabilities of the campus while also ensuring that the objectives of the renovation remain in line with Carleton’s sustainability commitments. Information Technology Services was invaluable in implementing our network of Internet-connected devices that keep the Dining Hall up and running. Our service kiosks, turnstiles, menu boards and more all add a wealth of convenience and 3 of 4 aesthetic appeal to the dining experiences we offer while meeting our operational needs. Campus Safety Services was proud to participate in the Opening Ceremony for the 2025 Special Olympics School Championships. Alongside our law enforcement partners, we helped carry the Flame of Hope through Ottawa and into the Opening Ceremonies, where it was used to light the Olympic cauldron in a powerful moment of unity and celebration to open the games. With over 1,100 athletes and coaches from across Ontario, B.C., and Alberta, this event was a powerful celebration of inclusion, determination, and community spirit. Good News - Turtles Eggs Safely Relocated!

On June 17, Healthy Workplace learned that a female snapping turtle had laid eggs in the volleyball sand court behind the Nesbitt Building. The turtle eggs (52 in total!) were safely relocated to Dr. Christina Davy's research lab where they are now being incubated. When the eggs hatch in August, Dr. Davy's team will release the hatchlings into the river (or safer shallow water nearby). Healthy Workplace was informed by the Biology Department that "the mother turtle [considered her work done], so there are no hard feelings from her" about the movement of her eggs.

Thank you to Dr. Christina Davy's team, the Biology Department, and Campus Safety Services for this co-ordinated effort ensuring the safety of wildlife on campus (and members of the Outdoor Volleyball group). We are pleased to confirm the area is safe and ready for volleyball games - bring a friend and join us on the sand.
