 1. UPDATE: current programmes ongoing at INI

There are two programmes currently underway at INI, with four of their seven total workshops having been held by this point. The full details of both programmes, including streamable recordings of all talks given so far as well as synopses of those to come, can be found via the following links:

> Homotopy harnessing higher structures (HHH)
> Scaling limits, rough paths, quantum field theory (SRQ)

If you would like to watch video interviews with the HHH and SRQ organisers, in which they discuss the nature and aims of their programmes, please click this link or the images below.

We have also recently published a new case study focusing on 2015's Random geometry programme (RGM) - itself the subject of a follow up workshop held in July of this year. You can read "Where probability, geometry and analysis collide" by clicking here or on the image below. All 15 of our currently published case studies can be found here.

2. IMAGES: photo highlights from "A celebration of Fermat's Last Theorem"

On the afternoon of Monday 1 October 2018 the Institute hosted the event "Fermat’s Last Theorem: a celebration 25 years on".

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Sir Andrew Wiles famously announcing his proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem at the Institute, the event featured technical talks with speakers including Andrew Wiles himself (Oxford), John Coates (Cambridge) and Jack Thorne (Cambridge); a presentation to Andrew Wiles; and a wine reception for the gathered guests.

The Institute was thrilled to see its main Seminar Room exceed its capacity for this significant event, and would like to extend its sincere thanks to all attendees and speakers involved.

3. REPORT: INI at New Scientist Live

For the second year running, INI attended New Scientist Live, a large-scale event based in London's ExCel centre with the aim of promoting public interest in and engagement with science in people of all ages. From 22-25 September 2018, the Institute attended in collaboration with six other organisations as part of the joint stand "Maths in the Real World".

Over the four day event the site welcomed over 20,000 visitors, hosted over 100 exhibitors and showcased popular maths communicators including Hannah Fry, Nira Chamberlain and Bobby Seagull.

Alongside the OR Society, IMA, ICMS, IMI, TGM, and UKMT, INI gave away over 6,000 branded foam puzzle cubes, and engaged in a high volume of public engagement through a combined team of over 40 volunteers.

4. EVENT: John Kinsella returns for poetry reading in January 2019

The Institute will be welcoming John Kinsella, poet-in-residence, for an evening of readings and conversation on 22 January 2019. Originally scheduled to take place during the winter of 2017/18, this event was postponed due to unforseen circumstances.

We are delighted that 2019 will bring with it the chance to hear, discuss and enjoy John's unique writing and to examine the connection between his art and the mathematics from which it draws inspiration.

Further details will follow in due course.

5. VACANCY: Chair of Correspondents applications to close soon

6. FACILITIES: Benians Court refurbishment update

Refurbishment of the Institute's Benians Court accommodation facilities continues to progress. In the past weeks flooring, bathroom facilities and kitchen units have begun to be fitted to the first group of flats to undergo refurbishment. Once completed, work will begin on the remaining three groups with an aim to finish the project in early summer 2019.
