INI NEWS BULLETIN
July 2021

Dear friends, associates and supporters of INI,

Welcome to the July 2021 edition of our monthly news bulletin. We hope it finds you well.

In this bulletin, you'll find two podcast interviews: the first with outgoing Director David Abrahams as he looks back on five years at the helm, the second with Professor Anotida Madzvamuse as he shares his inspiring journey from subsistence farming in rural Zimbabwe to a life of international mathematics.

You'll also find a video interview with the organisers of the Applicable resurgent asymptotics: towards a universal theory programme (which concluded at the end of last month), as well as details of the INI-backed events "Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference 2021" and "Induction Course for New Lecturers in the Mathematical Sciences 2021".

In brief, we'd also like to share that...

  • The Mathematics of Deep Learning programme has been underway since 1 July! You can see full details of its activities here.
  • The Turner Kirk Trust has a new website. Founded by Dr Ewan Kirk (INI Management Committee, Chair) and Dr Trish Turner, the Trust has made numerous significant donations to INI including the establishment of the Kirk Distinguished Visiting Fellowships.
  • As INI's funding options continue to grow, we would like to draw your attention to our childcare (and other care) support pages which you can find here.
  • Many congratulations are due to Professor Rebecca Hoyle (Infectious Dynamics of Pandemics programme) who has been awarded the inaugural IMA Hedy Lamarr Prize for Knowledge Exchange in Mathematics and its Applications.

As always, you can follow us on Twitter (as well as Instagram and Facebook) for regular updates of our activities throughout the month.

Thanks as always for your continued support.

PODCAST(s) OF THE MONTH: retrospective with a Director, inspiring tales with a former programme organiser

In the 30th episode of Living Proof, Dan Aspel catches up once more with INI Director David Abrahams. Approaching the end of his tenure in October 2021, David looks back on an intensive five years at the helm, considers the successes and challenges of his role, looks forward to opportunities that the future brings (for both him and INI) and – of course – finds time to discuss the thrilling summer of sport which has brought us a frenetic Tour de France and first tournament final for the England football team in 55 years.

00:00 – Introduction
01:05 – Euro 2020 and the Tour de France 2021
13:50 – Retrospective of time at INI
23:28 – Plans for the future
39:00 – High points of a Directorship

... meanwhile, the 31st episode welcomes Professor Anotida Madzvamuse (Sussex), whose life story has taken him from rural Zimbabwe to the University of Sussex via Cuba and the USA. Topics touched upon include: a childhood spent farming and foraging, studying away from his family aged just 12, travelling as a young academic, the exciting research outcomes of his specialism in mathematical biology, and advice for other young African mathematicians faced with the same challenges.

VIDEO: interview with organisers of the "Applicable resurgent asymptotics: towards a universal theory" programme.

The "Applicable resurgent asymptotics: towards a universal theory" programme ran in a hybrid capacity from 1 March to 25 June of this year. In this video interview, organisers Ines Aniceto, Chris Howls and Adri Olde Daalhuis discuss its theme, challenges and potential outcomes in the months and years to come.

EVENTS: "Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference 2021" & "Induction Course for New Lecturers in the Mathematical Sciences 2021".

Running from 5-6 October, the online event "Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference 2021" is being organised and produced by a handful of mathematical organisations including the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and INI itself. Please find a summary and application link below.

The Vision of the conference is “To celebrate the inspirational contributions of black role models to the field of Mathematics and Mathematics Education”. There will be a balance of technical talks by internationally renowned black speakers that include some detail of career paths and experience to provide a testimonial dimension. We plan to achieve a balance of career stage and gender.

Running from 8-9 September, the hybrid online and physical event Induction Course for New Lecturers in the Mathematical Sciences 2021 is also being organised and produced by - amongst others - the IMA and INI. A summary of this event and an application link also follow below.

The Induction Course for New Lecturers in the Mathematical Sciences has been designed by the mathematics community so that it is ideally suited for anyone who is new to or has limited experience teaching mathematics or statistics within UK higher education. It will be delivered by individuals with significant experience of teaching in the mathematical sciences and will focus upon the specific details and issues that arise in mathematics and statistics teaching and learning within higher education
