Key Economic Updates

Recent key economic updates from Stats New Zealand reveal mixed trends. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fell by 0.3% in the September 2023 quarter, a downturn from the previous quarter's 0.5% rise, indicating slower momentum in the New Zealand economy. This was accompanied by a 0.9% drop in GDP per capita, reflecting a decrease in New Zealanders' purchasing power. Additionally, the current account deficit remains a concern, showing a $400m increase in the September quarter, amounting to 7.6% of the economy's value, a level many economists view as unsustainable.
