8th Annual Hannig Cup Race - August 28th

Hey Racers and Friends,

Is your calendar cleared for Wed night, Aug 28? The annual Hannig Cup event at Sequoia Yacht Club is almost here. It provides major funding for the non-profit Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation (PYSF), Sequoia's youth sailing program and Sea Scouts. I hope you will attend and/or can pledge a donation of any amount for a great program in order to pay for the equipment, facilities, regattas and coaching for the next generation of sailors.

As many of you already know, we are expecting a huge turn out with over 50 dinghies, catamarans and keelboats participating. Ted Hannig is generously donating $100 for any sailboat racing that night. There will be a great dinner (7:30 ish) with live entertainment and general craziness after the racing.

There are two races...the sailing race and the funding race. Each year, the team that amasses the greatest total donations gets their name on the famous Hannig Cup perpetual trophy. Please consider putting your donation in with three time Cup winner,Team Odyssey. Penelope and I will be sailing Odyssey with as many guests as we can carry and fighting to get the Cup back from Larry Mayne's infamous "SYC Lounge Team". This epic battle is far more exciting that other "cup thing" going on in SF!

You can also put your bucks in with L2O, a boat being sailed by all PYSF alumni. It has won before and is a serious contender for the sailing trophy. Any donations for L2O will be pledged through Team Odyssey as well. You can make tax deductible donations to PYSF or any of several great causes. Any amount from the price of a burger to your entire venture capital fund will be appreciated.

As an added incentive Penelope and I will donate another $20 for the skipper of any boat collecting over $100 to be pledged with Team Odyssey. Just put "(Team Odyssey)" next to your boat name when you register donations at the door.

Racing starts around 5:30, cocktails begin at 7 and a fabulous dinner after racing at around 8. Dinners are $20 ahead of time and a bit more at the door.

All money will all go to the same great programs regardless of which boat you pledge with (even Larry's couch sailors). Get ready for fun and thanks for reading all the way to here! Feel free to forward this email.

The kids will really appreciate your generosity, and thanks from us.

Thank you Alex Huang

Wonderful Deck Party

The Summer Deck Party was held at the club on Saturday August 17. It was as close to a perfect summer evening as one could get, with a warm breeze that made dinner on the deck memorable and enjoyable. The menu was wonderful summer fare. It was all home-made and I don't think that there was anything left. The results couldn't have been better.

As with all events, success comes from the contributions of many. Special thanks goes to Lina Reynolds for all her hard work in preparing the wonderful and delicious menu, and to Steve Higgs for assisting with preparation in the afternoon while OD. Thanks also goes to Winston Bumpus for helping to get the deck in order before the party, putting the canopies up over the tables, and generally taking care of whatever needed to be done; to Sue Lockwood for assistance with setting up for serving; to Ron Howard for getting the sign-up sheet going, and to Allison for clean-up. I'm sure there were others who helped out behind the bar and around the club throughout the evening, so if I haven't mentioned your name, please be sure that we appreciate your assistance.

Keep those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer coming. It's not over yet!

Summer at Sequoia

Last Saturday was the perfect example of a great day in August at our great club.

We had a combination of the final race in the Summer Series together with a delightful deck party.

The race was enthusiastically attended and we had the benefit of a good day with moderate winds and a strong finish by everyone. Honors went to Larry Mayne in his WylieCat - well done Larry!

The deck party was hosted by Tim and Carol Peterson who outdid themselves with a superb dinner and a tastefully decorated setting on the deck. We enjoyed the ambience well into the evening. Tim and Carol were supported by Lina, Winston and Larry in getting everything in order.

In between the race and the deck party you could enjoy the America's Cup display on the screen in the lounge. No lack of excitement there as these amazing boats tackled the wind in the Bay and each other for the opportunity to challenge Oracle next month.

It may be the dog days of Summer but at Sequoia it is a summer to remember!

Bartenders Needed for the Hannig Cup

We have a great team of folks including the Sea Scouts that are volunteering to do the dinner, serve and cleanup, but we do need bartenders to help with this great event.

I hope to have two on duty at 1700 hours and five on duty at the peak of the event about 1830 hours.

Please contact me by phone (650-759-3451) or email  nickweber5@att.net as I will handle scheduling.

Thank you,

Nick Weber - Bar Manager

Half Moon Bay Cruise Out

Join us for our annual blue water cruise-out over Labor Day weekend.  The plan is:

Friday 8/30:
make your way up the Bay somewhere with your boat, preferably in the early afternoon with the ebb.  Metridium will likely anchor at Aquatic Park, but we don't raft up at Aquatic Park.  Or wait and leave Redwood City Saturday morning.  1kt ebb peaks at 1pm at the San Mateo Bridge.

Saturday 8/31:
meet up just outside Aquatic Park at noon, if you'd like to catch the start of the ebb out the Gate and travel in loose convoy.  Or meet us in Half Moon Bay.  If it happens to be foggy, arrange a "radar or AIS buddy".  Anchor in Half Moon Bay, relax for the afternoon, then enjoy cocktails, appetizers and a potluck dinner on the rafted boats.  A dinghy with an outboard will be useful.

Sunday 9/1:
Dinner out, probably at Flavor
http://www.flavoronthecoast.com

Monday 9/2:
leave Half Moon Bay around 8am to catch the flood at the gate until 1pm, then sail back to Redwood City.

Let us know if you'd like to join us, either by boat or blacktop, and how many would like to go out to dinner Sunday night.
