Thursday, 4th August - National Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day

Key Messages Week 2

Having started the week with a very soggy and wet oval and grounds, what a wonderful change to see the glorious sunshine at the end of the week bringing to a close a week of celebration here at JPC. We have continued to follow the journey of Ms Keane and Ms Boller as the main celebrations and formalities of World Youth Day begin in earnest in Poland this week.

On Thursday we formally recognised the academic effort and achievement of our students in their Semester 1 classes at our Awards Ceremony. The ceremony also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the wonderful spirit, and often occurring behind the scenes and no expectation of recognition, that exists within our Houses with the presentation of two House spirit awards for each House. Congratulations to all of our award recipients. During the ceremony Mrs O’Meara took the opportunity to remind our community of the value of perseverance and the benefits of adopting our key philosophical approach of a growth mindset. If you keep trying and don’t give up, eventually the “power of yet” will come to fruition and we can achieve any goal we set for ourselves. It was wonderful to see how much our community has grown and to be able to recognise and share this special event with so many families. A special thanks is extended to all those staff members who work tirelessly behind the scenes, without their hard work and meticulous organisation, occasions such as this would not be the success that they are.

At the end of last term and over the past two weeks, I have had the privilege of spending time with our Year 10 students and their families to select their subjects for when they return to JPC in Year 11. This is an exciting but can be at times a daunting process. Next week we continue the transition process that was started last term with Year 10 students visiting the Canberra CareersXpo on Thursday at Exhibition Park. This visit will enable students to speak one-on-one with representatives from a range of tertiary institutions and training providers, as well as see hands on displays in a range of trades and post-school employment options. The Xpo is open to the general public, and more information can be found on their website, http://www.canberracareersmarket.com.au.

As we settle into the new term, staff are busily creating unit outlines, assessment and units of work for each of their classes. Can I remind parents that if you use the Assessment Alert App, this needs to be updated or refreshed. The updated data for Semester 2 classes will be available from Monday 1 August. Families should be able to access this information on Moodle from each class page and unit outline. Families with students in Year 10 are reminded, as their children have been in each of their classes over the past two weeks, that in preparation for their senior studies, resubmissions and resits of assessment tasks are no longer available. This may mean that students will need to plan their ILT even more effectively and carefully to enable them to clarify tasks with their teachers and to utilise tutorials when they are offered.

As I walk down the Learning Street this afternoon I am faced with a sea of colourful Olympic posters. I am sure that like me during my ILT lessons over the past two weeks, many of you at home have learned something new (and possibly obscure) about a country competing in the Rio Olympics. I suspect that there is very little cardboard available for purchase in the entire Gungahlin region!

I wish you all a lovely, sun-filled weekend that is not too muddy once weekend sport resumes.

NAPLAN Online

The ACT government has made the decision that from 2017 onwards, NAPLAN will be completed by students using an online secure platform. To enable schools to prepare for this, a trial of the platform will be held in mid-August with a group of Year 8 students. More information as to the nature of the trial and the students involved will be available closer to the time of the testing. This is not an ‘extra’ NAPLAN, rather an opportunity to test the hardware and the systems that will be needed next year.

Defence News

Last term students and staff dedicated beautiful crocheted poppies which were then taken to France with Mrs Atilemile.  Mrs Atilemile was fortunate to attend the commemorations at Fromelles and Pozières, which she said were very moving ceremonies. She also assisted with the installation of a field of 26,500 poppies at the Australian Memorial Park (the ‘Cobbers’ statue) in Fromelles for a week, and was able to engage with many visitors, both Australian and French, who shared their families’ stories and memories about this part of the Great War.

Our dedicated poppies were planted at the VC Corner memorial at Fromelles and at the Windmill Site just outside of Pozières.  One of our staff’s dedicated poppies appeared in an ABC news article.

JPC’s tributes and prayers now lie in the fields of Flanders and the Somme, where thousands of young men now lie, forever remembered by the French and by the Australians.  Lest we forget.

Changes to Bus Service 808

From Tuesday 2 August 2016 Gungahlin Bus Station Platform 1 on Hibberson Street will be temporarily relocated, for approximately 6 - 8 weeks. This is to allow for construction on The Marketplace expansion. Please see map below of the bus stop relocation.

Platform 1 (Stop ID 7002) will be relocated to Gozzard Street, near the Raiders Club. Platform 2 (Stop ID 7004) and the bus stops at the eastern end of Hibberson Street near Kate Crace Street will continue to operate. Shelters and seating will be provided at the temporary bus station. ACTION ask students and parents to please plan ahead and use NXTBUS to avoid delays.

The affected dedicated school service travelling through Gungahlin Marketplace for St John Paul II College is Service 808.

Service 808 will be dropped off on Hibberson Street Stop 6135.

This information is now available on the Transport Canberra website

Carpark Safety

After a very close near miss between a bus and a student earlier this week, it has been brought to the school's attention that some parents are parking in and behind the bus stop zone during drop off and pick up times. The bus zone and the area before the bus zone, including the entry and exit to the short stay carpark directly in front of the school, are not designated pick up and drop off areas.

We ask that parents who wish to stop and wait for their child after school use the desiganted area which is to left of the road before the exit from the school, or in designated car parks.

Parents are not to park near or in the bus zone at any time as it poses a significant safety risk to our students and drivers using the bus zones.

Road Ready Courses

Whilst JPC had envisaged being able to offer the Road Ready Driver Training course this year to our students, unfortunately this will not be the case. In order to offer such a program a staff member from the school is required to have specific training to allow delivery. We are a relatively small staff, and do not have an assessor on staff who is able to run the program at this stage. The College does understand that there are a number of private providers that do offer this service in Canberra. Students who reside in NSW are not eligible to participate in Road Ready as NSW has an alternate Driver Training program.

U15 Boys AFL Day Wednesday 20 July 2016

Under very grey skies on a muddy oval at Reid Park, our boys under 15 AFL side were keen to perform well to represent the school and themselves to the best of their ability. The vast majority of the team was made up of students from Years 7 and 8 with only 4 boys from Year 9. Two parents volunteered their time to coach the boys on the day. Very special thanks to Brett Staples (Joshua’s Dad) and Mark Hynes (James’s Dad) for their generosity and expertise.

We started with a game against Canberra High which we won convincingly 6.0.36 to 0.3.3.

Goal scorers were Jake Thorpe 2, Ryan Stewart 2, Connor Bobruk and Jordan McMaster.
