INI NEWS BULLETIN
August 2021

Dear friends, associates and supporters of INI,

Welcome to the August 2021 edition of our monthly news bulletin. We hope it finds you well.

This month, you'll find a newly released short film designed to celebrate the Isaac Newton Institute and explain its function and significance to the wider world. Featuring interviews with past programme participants, programme organisers, and senior INI staff, we hope it stirs fond memories and inspires you on to future involvement.

We also have a fascinating video interview with the organisers of the ongoing "Mathematics of deep learning" (MDL) programme, an insightful podcast interview with the charming Prof Alex Kontorovic (Rutgers), and a downloadable poster advertising the many facets of the forthcoming "Mathematical aspects of turbulence: where do we stand?" programme which we hope you will aid us in distributing widely.

Our "news in brief" this month is that...

  • The hybrid "Cluster algebras and representation theory" (CAR) programme begins on 6 September and runs until 17 December.
  • CAR will enjoy two workshops within its first month! "New developments in representation theory arising from cluster algebras research school" will run from 13-17 September, while "New developments in representation theory arising from cluster algebras" takes place the following week from 20-24 September. Make sure to visit the website to watch many of the talks live.
  • Appointments for the new Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Mathematics (first advertised here) have been made. Full details of the recipients will feature on newton.ac.uk in due course.
  • From 23-25 August, the MDL programme hosted a trilogy of highly anticipated lectures on "Geometric Deep Learning" by Prof Michael Bronstein (Imperial). You can find all three detailed, and watch the recordings, under the "Seminars" tab of the MDL homepage here.
  • We are proud to share the news that Dr Christie Marr (INI Deputy Director) has not only been awarded an Executive MBA by the Judge Business School, but has been celebrated amongst the "Best & Brightest" of the cohort by the Poets&Quants social network. Read an interview with Christie on the P&Q site here.

As always, you can follow us on Twitter (as well as Instagram and Facebook) for regular updates of our activities throughout the month.

Thanks as always for your continued support.

We're proud to present a new "headline" film (produced with DragonLight Films), introducing the Institute to the wider world and explaining the significance of the activities that happen here. We hope it proves inspiring and that you are moved to share it widely!

What is the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences? What kind of people attend its workshops and programmes, and what does the research undertaken at its University of Cambridge-based centre mean for mathematics and the wider world?

This short film answers these questions and more. Make sure to browse the rest of our website to learn more about the Institute, to plan your own visit, to propose a research programme, and to watch the many thousands of recorded seminars available online.

VIDEO: interview with organisers of the "Mathematics of deep learning" programme.

The "Mathematics of deep learning" programme has been running since 1 July and will continue until 17 December, with participants attending both in person at INI in Cambridge and connecting online with the workshops, seminars and discussions.

In this video interview, organisers Anders Hansen, Gitta Kutyniok, Peter Bartlett and Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb discuss its theme, challenges and potential outcomes in the months and years to come.

LIVING PROOF PODCAST: Quanta, MoMath and communicating mathematics with Alex Kontorovic.

In episode #32 of Living Proof, Dan Aspel and Christie Marr are joined by Alex Kontorovic. A professor of mathematics at Rutgers University, Alex is also the 2020-21 distinguished visiting professor for the public dissemination of mathematics at MoMath (or, put more formally, the National Museum of Mathematics in New York City), a Scientific Board Member of Quanta magazine, and a passionate communicator of his subject.

00:00 – Introduction
00:32 – Welcome
02:12 – A history of communicating maths – if you’re doing outreach, are you a real researcher?
10:04 – Why has maths always struggled for the spotlight?
14:05 – Working with Quanta magazine, inspiration for the young
27:00 – All about MoMath (and square-wheeled bikes)
36:38 – Current research interests… number theory
45:30 – Farewell (and tea-time)
