Improved data collection is critical to assess the collective progress of the charitable and not-for-profit sectors to better reflect the diversity of Canada. Statistics Canada has now developed its first-ever voluntary survey to provide a baseline about diversity in the governance of the Canadian charitable and non-profit sector. I strongly encourage all of your Board members to take a few minutes to complete a voluntary survey about board diversity and to invite all of your grantees’ board directors to do likewise before the December 31st deadline. This data collection is conducted under the authority of the Statistics Act, which ensures that the information provided will be kept confidential, and used for statistical and research purposes. Many foundations are stepping up and adapting their practices while becoming more engaged with their partners, as seen in our newest and most comprehensive COVID19 Mapping Report to date. The report is produced by Philanthropic Foundations Canada (PFC) in collaboration with Drs. Susan Phillips (Carleton University) and Jean-Marc Fontan of PhiLab (UQÀM) and incorporates findings from three sources: the Funder’s mapping survey, the Foundation Key Informant Panel, and a series of case studies in order to identify key lessons learned by leaders in the sector and guide us as we move toward recovery. Canada’s Leading Financial Institutions Commit $5 Million to Institute for Sustainable Finance Canada’s big five banks have committed $5 million in support of ISF’s mission to transition the country to a low carbon economy. Funding from TD Bank Group, Scotiabank, CIBC, BMO and RBC will help support ISF’s efforts in education, professional training, research and collaboration, including producing robust resources and insights about sustainable finance to strengthen Canada’s leadership and expertise in this area. Read More An Evolution of Tax Policy that Supports Charitable Giving CAGP has been an active and vital voice advocating for a tax and legislative environment that strengthens charitable giving in Canada. Recently its Government Relations Committee undertook a project to map the evolution of tax policy over the years. This page identifies more than 30 key achievements or seminal moments in policy discussion that have occurred since 1996, of how Canada came to have one of the most generous tax systems in the world in support of philanthropy. PhiLab has initiated a series of small case studies evaluating recent initiatives in the field. The research was conducted with PhiLab’s Ontario and Quebec hubs, UQÀM, and with the support of the Nipissing University. Read More Lawson Foundation Outdoor Play Strategy Final Report (Philanthropic Sector) This summary report summarizes the findings of the third-party evaluation of the Strategy as a whole, as conducted by the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation (SRDC), including valuable learnings and reflections to help direct the Foundation’s next steps in exploring outdoor play associated with improved health, social, and cognitive outcomes for children. This report contains the findings most relevant to the philanthropic sector including the value of funding multiple projects in various sectors and with diverse approaches, fostering a cohort approach and developing collaborative relationships. Read More T3010 Filing Extension – Less Than 1 Month Until Deadline The December 31, 2020 filing deadline for all charities with a T3010, Registered Charity Information Return, due between March 18, 2020 and December 31, 2020 is now only less than one month away. If your charity hasn’t already filed its information return, there is still time to do so before the December 31st deadline passes. Read More International Alliance of Mental Research Funders Report on Global Mental Health Research Funding International Alliance of Mental Health Research Funders launches its new study “The Inequities of Mental Health Research Funding.” This study analyzes over 75,000 research grants by nearly 350 funders from over 35 countries. It creates an important new baseline for mental health research as it identifies how much is being spent on research, in what areas and by whom. This report finds that only a small proportion of mental health research funding is currently spent in low- and middle-income countries, the majority of research funded is basic, such as neuroscience, as opposed to clinical/applied, and research tends to focus on adults rather than young people or the elderly.
