CEO updateWe’re delighted to launch this regular newsletter for Inclusion Barnet members and friends, as a new way to keep you updated on what’s going on and all our latest work. This is very much your newsletter, so do please contact me at caroline@inclusionbarnet.org.uk if there are any topics or features you’d like to see in the future. This newsletter will be with you monthly, letting you know about meetings, events, consultations and more, so keep a look out for it and find out how you can get involved. As I’ve always said, the most important people in Inclusion Barnet are you, our members and friends, so please do get in touch and make your voice heard. Inclusion Barnet newsGet involved! Right now we're busy setting up a new stand-alone micro website, funded the National Lottery, that will be run by and for disabled people in Barnet. It will report on local issues affecting disabled people in Barnet, from the serious to the social, and everything in-between. We are providing free training and expenses to disabled people in Barnet who want to volunteer as community reporters. If you'd like to get involved click on the link below! We’re recruiting: Head of Community Services We’re looking for an individual with excellent leadership skills to lead our services and projects which focus on community and community development. Full-time: 35 hours per week Location: Barnet, NW9, London Salary: £43,000 per year Contract: Until 31st March 2023 (with strong prospect of becoming permanent) Closing date: 9 October 2021 Do you use social care services in Barnet? If you, or someone you know, gets help at home or in a care setting that is partly or fully paid for by social care services in Barnet, we'd really like to talk to you. We’d like to hear your views (in strictest confidence) on the care you receive and how it can be improved. We think that the people who use public services should be involved in having a say in how they are set up to work. Meet our teamEve Byers, User Voice Project Lead 1. How long have you worked at Inclusion Barnet? I joined the Touchpoint team as a Peer Worker in August 2019, and moved to my current role as User Voice Project Lead in October 2020 2. What is the main thing you are working on right now? Recruiting to an exciting new User Voice Project Officer role, and preparing a report for our generous funders City Bridge Trust on the first year of the project 3. How does having lived experience impact your role? Lived experience is a skill that can’t be learned in a classroom; it’s one that we gain by navigating the world as disabled people whether we like it or not, so it seems like an obvious choice to use it for good. I like to think that having lived experience means I can understand other disabled people on a slightly more intuitive level, and gives me a good grounding to expand my perspective further. 4. The best thing about working at Inclusion Barnet? It makes me very happy that we are encouraged to bring our whole selves to work. The team is so talented, kind and encouraging. If one of us is having a bad day, we know that we can say it out loud and count on the support of our colleagues. 5. Favourite way to spend time when you’re not working? Up a wall! I started climbing a few months ago, and I love it so much. Barnet has a great bouldering centre called The Arch, and Paraclimbing London run amazing sessions for disabled climbers at various locations. Consultations and campaignsHealth and disability green paper We're supporting the Z2K Trust (Zacchaeus 2000 Trust) in their campaign to get people to respond to the consultation on the Govt Health and Disability Green Paper. We believe that benefit assessments need urgent reform, yet Govt's Health & Disability Green Paper lacks ambition and any commitment to meaningful change. Take action and have your say. Scrap care charges Our friends at Inclusion London are leading a campaign to scrap social care charges. They are encouraging organisations and individuals to lobby their local MPs to urge them to write to the Health and Social Care Secretary, Sajid Javid. We've already written to our local MP in Barnet, Matthew Offord. If you'd like to support this campaign too, more details are below. About usMembership Why not become a member of Inclusion Barnet?
