INI NEWS BULLETIN
June 2021

Dear friends, associates and supporters of INI,

Welcome to the June 2021 edition of our monthly news bulletin, which is reaching you a week or so later than we'd have hoped. However, we're sure the interest below will more than compensate for the tardiness.

In this bulletin, you'll find new INI photography courtesy of Martin Bond (of "A Cambridge Diary"), a welcome to the Mathematics of deep learning programme, some behind-the-scenes images from a recent day of filming, a reminder of our forthcoming celebration of Sir Michael Atiyah, and a repeat of our exciting new call for proposals.

We'd also like to add, in brief, that...

  • On Saturday 3 July, INI celebrated the 29th anniversary of its opening.
  • We continue to enjoy fruitful support of the Juniper Consortium and its many inspiring seminars
  • Last month's Q&A "Verified Software" celebration of Quicksort with inventor Tony Hoare is now available to view online.
  • The Heilbronn Institute has launched a "rolling call for small grants of up to £5,000" for projects "supportive of UK mathematical research".

As ever, you can follow us on Twitter (as well as Instagram and Facebook) for regular updates of our activities throughout the month.

Thanks as always for your continued support.

PROGRAMMES: welcoming the Mathematics of deep learning

(above) the Mathematics of deep learning (MDL) main image and its participants kicking off their programme with Friday night drinks on 02/06/21.

Running from 1 July  to 19 December 2021, the Mathematics of deep learning programme aims to "achieve substantial progress in developing a theoretical foundation of deep learning". To this end, the organisers aim to gather "top experts from various areas of mathematics and of the theory of machine learning, including computer scientists, physicists, and statisticians in one place, initiating collaborations across intra- and interdisciplinary boundaries and thereby generating unprecedented research dynamics".

You can find full details of the programme and its five workshops via the link below.

Due to the massive amounts of training data complemented by a tremendously increased computing power, deep neural networks have recently seen an impressive comeback. In fact, we currently witness how algorithms based on deep neural networks are infusing numerous aspects of the public sector such as being used for pre-screening job applications or revolutionizing the healthcare industry. A similarly strong impact can be observed on science itself. Deep learning based approaches have proven very useful within certain mathematical problem settings such as solving ill-posed inverse problems or high-dimensional partial differential equations, sometimes already leading to state-of-the-art algorithms. However, most of the related research is still empirically driven and a sound theoretical foundation is largely missing. This is not only a significant problem from a scientific viewpoint, but particularly critical for sensitive applications such as in the health care sector. Thus there exists a tremendous need for mathematics of deep learning.

PROPOSALS: call for satellite research programme proposals, and more.

As per our message of last week, a substantial uplift in UKRI funding has allowed INI to launch its new "Satellite Programmes" initiative, further strengthening our commitment towards increasing activity in other parts of the UK.

The Institute invites proposals for satellite research programmes of four weeks, four months or six months duration in any branch of mathematics or the mathematical sciences to be hosted elsewhere across the UK.

Full details of this call, as well as details on proposing regular programmes or follow-on workshops, can be found via the link below. Please do spread this message throughout your networks.

EVENTS: "The unity of mathematics: A conference in honour of Sir Michael Atiyah", 21-23 September 2021

As mentioned in previous bulletins, INI is proud to be hosting a seminal event celebrating Sir Michael Atiyah's "immense contributions to mathematics and the mathematical life of this country".

Full details can be found via the link below, and applications are welcome until 8 August 2021.

GALLERY: photographer Martin Bond's first take on INI.

We are pleased to announce that INI has recently commissioned Cambridge-based photographer Martin Bond to document INI and its activities. The first of these sessions took place in June and focused on the Institute's architecture and its place within the Centre for Mathematical Sciences as a whole. We expect to make regular use of these images across INI's website and printed publicity materials.

Martin will return to the Institute regularly throughout the coming year as physical attendance at our events continues to grow and recover to pre-pandemic levels. Watch this space for more exciting visuals.

GALLERY: Behind-the-scenes of an exciting day of filming...

Earlier this year INI collaborated with Colin Ramsay and DragonLight Films to create an introductory video to the Institute for virtual programme participants. On Friday 18 June we took up that collaboration once again to film a new, flagship welcome video which will be housed on the front page of our website.

Currently in edit, we're very excited to share this new project with you as soon as it's ready for release. In the meantime, we'd like to share these few images from a thrilling day of interviews and filming, and to extend our sincerest thanks to guests Anotida Madzvamuse, Reidun Twarock and Wendelin Werner for their time, insight and inspiring words.
