Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

What a difference a week makes!  On this day last week, Sue and I were at the Delta Yacht Club on a very hot day floating down a slough off the mighty San Joaquin, enjoying a beer with several other members.  Our great stressor that day was trying to time the current change so as not to be swept past the last ladder along the dock…

The Delta this year was epic.  The weather was just about perfect.  Tuesday’s party, hosted by Rick and Petra Gilmore, was outstanding, and, just when it couldn’t get any better, we wrested the coveted Delta Trophy away from our friends at the Oakland Yacht club.   There was some talk that the Oakland cruisers were explicitly told not to bring it home due to its sheer gawd-awfullness, but that might have been just talk…

But, enough of that except to say please give this whole Delta thing some thought for next year.  If you have a boat, make the journey.  If you don’t, plan to blacktop and maybe spend the night.  You will not be sorry.

Back here at 441 Seaport, more adventures await…

You all may have noticed some de-lamination of the floor in the Dining Room.  This has been caused by a burst pipe in the dishwasher drain.  We are in the process of having this repaired and work is scheduled to commence next week.  This has the potential to minimally disrupt our galley and dining room.  I am confident we will adapt and overcome any obstacles and continue to provide the high level of service we have come to enjoy.  Except maybe on paper plates!

Speaking of dining, our next Drop In Dinner is this Friday, 8/8.  There will not be a General Meeting with this dinner.  Lina is planning the following menu:

  • Baked Ham
  • Lemon Chicken with Capers
  • Red potatoes with roasted garlic and parsley
  • Peas and sherry mushrooms
  • Mixed greens with toasted pine nuts, blueberries and tomatoes with a classic French herb dressing.
  • Red velvet cake and brownies and ice cream.

Wow.  All for $ 14.50 per person.

Moving quickly to the rest of August, we will have another DID on August 22nd.  Chris and Michele Hartman will be making a presentation of their trip to the Antarctic.  I am very much looking forward to their talk.

Of course, Wednesday Cards and Beer Can Races will continue throughout August.

It’s been kind of quiet around the club so come on down and make some noise!

Remembering Barbara & Dick Trainer

Dick and Janet Trainer along with their friends Alan and Barbara Ferguson were active DaySailer racers in the Palo Alto Yacht Club fleet. Both Dick and Alan were Past Commodores of the Palo Alto Yacht Club (1959 & 1962). After Janet and Alan passed away, Dick and Barbara became a couple and married to their families' and friends' joy.

Dick and Barbara became institutions at Sequoia Yacht Club. Thier member number was 588. Dick passed away last year in August and Barbara passed away last week.

We shall miss them and hope they are all sailing together again.

Dashing Haberdashery

We are so very lucky to have so many talented members who step forward to share their expertise at our Club. This week we are blessed to have the contributions from one of our newest members, Christine Kupczak, who designs all of the window displays at the Hillsdale Mall. She volunteered to spruce up our haberdasher display window and I think it is just outstanding. Please make sure you stop by to take a look at the window the next time you enter the Club.  (We do have a lot of nifty things to buy, thanks to our great haberdasher Linda Ryan.) And be sure to welcome Christine and let her know how much you enjoy her work.

Thank you Christine!
