Regent College - Your child loving The Regent Digest! No Images? Click here 22nd October 2017
Dear College Families I would like to begin by thanking the Regent community for attending the recent "Be the Change" Concert. I'm sure you would agree it was a superb performance with an important message. Thank you to the Riverview Church leadership and staff for supporting us, and allowing us to use the auditorium for this purpose. This past weekend's services at Riverview included a short video presentation featuring Regent College. This video was filmed and edited by the production crew at Riverview and will be added to the College website early this week. If you would like to learn more about Riverview Church, including the Riverview Kids program, follow the link HERE. Blessings, Derek Nicholls
Fight Cancer with FOOTY COLOURS DAY NEW DATE: THIS Friday 27th October, 2017 Schools around Australia show their true colours on Footy Colours Day, to make sure children with cancer achieve the same educational milestones as their peers. Football unites people, whether it is AFL, NRL, A League, Rugby Union or any other code. This Friday the 27th October, Regent College will unite, stand shoulder- to shoulder with fellow Australians and support children living with cancer. We have set aside this day for our students to wear their favourite footie team colours or uniforms instead of their usual College uniform. Students are asked to bring in a gold coin/s donation which will be forwarded to the Fight Cancer Foundation. If everyone gets involved, our donation should make a difference. Thank you in advance - Mrs Quinlivan KINDERGARTEN 3 On our first day back at school this term, we observed that the playground equipment at the front of the school was missing! We had a meeting to discuss what might have happened to it? We had many questions and we needed answers! We recorded our thoughts and then decided to write letters to Mr Nicholls to ask him what had happened. We delivered the letters to Mrs Baird and made an appointment so that Mr Nicholls could come to our class and answer all of our questions. He came to visit us on a Friday. Mr Nicholls brought our letters with him and answered all our very important questions. We now know what happened to the playground equipment - we know who took it; we know how they broke it down; we know where it is right now; and we know what is going to happen to the place where it was standing. We are looking forward to seeing the crane that is going to deliver the temporary offices and we are excited to draw plans of how we think the new outdoor play area should look. Mrs Funk PRE-PRIMARY This term in Pre-Primary, we welcome Miss Yenny and Mrs Betteridge into our classrooms for six weeks. Mrs Betteridge set up a top shop which is now open in Pre-Primary 2. This play area is designed for students to investigate how toys move through dramatic play, sparking interest in our upcoming Science topic. It also provides opportunity to explore money and social interactions. Pre-Primary 1 are enjoying exploring their interests in the discover area of their classroom. Our first Mathematics topic for the term is addition and subtraction. In week 1, the students explored addition through many hands-on activities. They played hula-hoop addition by throwing beanbags into hoops to create their own number sentences. Some of the students built towers, using counting strategies to work out how many blocks they would have when asked to add more. Collage addition was another popular activity where students made number sentences using collage materials. Miss Shaw and IMPORTANT DATES: Early Learning Centre (ELC) Parents Friday 1st December at 2:00pm Wednesday 6th December: Friday 8th December YEAR 1.1 In Year 1.1 we have enjoyed a fabulous start to Term 4! We have learnt about the seasons and represented them through drama and various artworks. We learnt about the Noongar seasons and created a dot painting to represent one season. In Mathematics, we have compared different units of time, and are getting very good at reading time on a clock to the hour and half hour. In Literacy, we have been discussing the different purposes of texts. We found some very interesting facts as we researched animals using informative texts, and we are beginning to put together our very own information report using the research we gathered. Miss Masters YEAR 1/2 In Year 1/2 we have commenced learning about data. We collected all the crayons from around the classroom and sorted them into colours. Using our clipboards, we each recorded the data in a way that suited us. Some of us made tables, while others created a list. Once we had recorded our data we scanned a QR code on our iPads and entered the data into Create a Graph. Those who finished early became experts and helped those around them. We printed our bar graphs and added colour to them. We will now analyse the data making inferences and answering questions such as; “Which coloured crayon do we have the most of?” In other learning areas, we have looked at the difference between simple and compound sentences and what conjunction are. The Year 1 students have been adding expression and intonation while reading aloud. The Year 2 students have combined with the Year 2.1 class to grow mealworms in Science. Miss Jongeling YEAR 2.1 This term, our theme is the past, present and future. The students enjoyed helping to construct a time machine at the entrance of our classroom and set up our class museum. The students have great ideas and the time machine /museum is progressing well. Some of the skills in History we are covering this term are; sequencing familiar objects and events, identifying and comparing features of objects from the past and present. The students have read about the history of some different toys and games and placed them on a time line. We have discussed how they have changed or stayed the same. Some students have brought their parent’s childhood toys to display in our class museum, which we have included in our time line. In Technology and Enterprise, some of the students have completed their design and construction of a toy. Some of the students put their sewing skills to good use and made a soft toy. In Science, the students were introduced to ‘mealworms’. There were mixed reactions of delight and disgust when they first laid their eyes on the mealworms! The students will record the growth of mealworms everyday by drawing pictures on their mealworm calendar, including writing a diary. Mrs Jenkins YEAR 3.1 What do van Gogh; questioning, analyzing and reflecting; rhyming and personification; space stations; Earth’s orbit and multiplication investigations have in common? They all appeared in Year 3.1 last week. Our last 45 days in Year 3 have begun with a blast of activity and we are looking forward to an exciting term of research, investigation and creativity. We have learned different ways to use our times tables to solve number problems and shared a lot of facts we think we know about the sun, the moon and Earth. Since we constructed paper models of Earth’s orbit around the sun we have begun to understand details of their relationship more clearly. In HASS we used our research skills of observation and questioning to write about what we could see in an old photograph. We learned that many years ago there were market gardens grown by Chinese men along the South Perth foreshore and we hope to discover more about that as the term goes by. Mrs Johnston YEAR 4.1 In Health, we have been learning about the POOCH problem solving strategy, which helps us to see that we can solve some problems by ourselves! P stands for: What is the problem? This acronym is well worth remembering! Last week Coach Cash from Commonwealth Bank came to train us to be Cashletes! We had a warm-up session and then we were taught about saving and spending. Aliza and Lucas were the shoppers and one had cash and the other had a debit card. This showed us how it is easy to lose track of our spending when we have a card in our hands... Mrs Innes Congratulations Year 4s The Year 4 class has achieved some impressive results in the recent Typing Tournament Online Challenge! In the Under 10 age group, they came first (1st) in Western Australia for the most words typed and second (2nd) in Western Australia for the fastest class average, typing 19.98 words per minute! This gave the class the position of eighth (8th) fastest in Australia! Well done Year 4.1! YEAR 5/6 In River Rangers, the students visited CREEC where they learnt about the human impact on the Swan-Canning River catchment and the consequences for living things. The students interacted with a 3-D model to observe how pollutants enter our river system and discussed how our precious water resources may be managed more sustainably in the future. In Mathematics, the students have learnt about Butterfly maths. This is a concept that makes multiplying fractions easy. We have also created some interesting board games that cover the concept of multiplication. Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES In primary schools, students are being taught the languages of letters and numbers to be able to speak, understand, and impact this world — Mathematics, Science, Technology, and code must be part of that knowledge. If we want students to be able to understand the technology that they use every day, then we must provide those building blocks from an early age. The ability to code enables young people to become creators rather than consumers of that technology. Students with this creative capacity and technical literacy will hold the power in the future. They are the next generation of entrepreneurs, and, as some teenagers and younger students have shown us, they are already the entrepreneurs of today. In Years 4 to 6, students are embarking on Scratch; a world-wide, open source programming environment which allows students to learn at their own pace, while sharing theirs and others’ knowledge freely. The Year 6 students have already created a maths programme aimed at Year 3 level, to test their times tables; they are now working on an animation of the “Armour of God”. We hope to be able to share the results with the Regent Community at some point. Mrs Saxton MUSIC Throughout Term 3, our Year 3 students were learning how to improvise using notes of the C major Scale. They also composed their own ‘Icecream Tunes’ to play during the instrumental breaks of a song called ‘Mr Ice-cream Man’. Students worked in groups to create their own musical arrangement and performed their arrangements to their peers. It was a very enjoyable experience, full of musical flavour. Over Term 3, our Year 4 students have been learning to improvise using the D minor pentatonic scale. They accompany themselves with simple, chordal harmonies using pitched percussion instruments and create rhythmic patterns that compliment their rhythmic and melodic ideas. Pictured here, students are enjoying the sounds of their own improvisations within a clear rhythmic and harmonic structure. Mrs Marshall Running Club Running Club will continue this term and new runners are welcome. Students in Years 2 to Year 6 who are keen to improve their fitness and want to run longer distances can meet Mrs French at Raphael Park Mondays 8:00am. The students will then be walked back to school ready for the 8:30am start. Hope to see more students improving their fitness and enjoying their running. Mrs French Fathering Project: Big Camp Out It was with a sense of nostalgia and privilege that a group of Regent Dads and kids arrived at Subiaco Oval for one of the final ever events to be held at the venue (in its current form). The Big Campout hosted by The Fathering Project and Outdoors WA was an opportunity for fathers to spend quality time with their children in a setting that is better known for sorting greatness than camping. After the 400+ attendees had arrived and set up their tents (on the most pristine grass you’d ever hope to pitch a tent), activities commenced bathed in perfect spring conditions. A range of activities including kite making, football skills, mini-helicopter making, Zumba and a range of father/child trust activities we conducted across the afternoon. The main gathering space was the Bill Walker room, which is generally the inner sanctum of prestigious football functions, however across the weekend, this space was used for meals and several of the activities. After dinner, there was plenty of time for expending any leftover energy under the stadium lights or quiet board games/cards in the tent. Fathers were encouraged to spend one-on-one time with kids before heading off to bed. After dark, the stadium took on an unfamiliar quiet eeriness, bearing no resemblance to when the venue has 40,000+ screaming spectators. First light brought about the sounds of kids up and kicking balls around, soon followed by the smell of a cooked breakfast. As the temperature rose throughout the morning, there were several activities which were again designed to facilitate father/child interaction, along with creativity and problem solving by children. After building ‘stomp rockets’ everyone was assembled on the oval to test the flying capabilities of their rockets. This was followed by making parachutes out of balloons and shopping bags. With eggs as the precious cargo, they were dropped off the grandstand to test the cushioning ability. The last of the structured activities was a variety of games and exercises on the oval, before packing up and a lunch prior to leaving. It’s fair to say that all dad’s and kids had a fantastic time, and we all came away having learnt new skills and a greater value on time spend with each other. Thanks to all the Regent Dads who attended and helped to make the event enjoyable. Our next event is being held on the 18th November, and will be a bottle rocket activity day. Further details will come out shortly, however save the date, as it’s bound to be a lot of fun.
