Raising Patient Awareness on the Importance of Immunizations

Dozens of Academy Resources Available for Members

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and as the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 spreads across the country, it’s a reminder of how important vaccines are to protecting community health. To support members on this critical issue, the Academy offers extensive immunization-related resources at AAFP.org.

The Academy’s Immunizations & Vaccines webpage provides members with the latest information on vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases, and gives updates on how FPs are addressing questions and concerns around vaccines in their communities. It currently offers the 2021 immunization schedules, recommendations from the Academy on influenza vaccine administration, toolkits and much more. Read more...

F.D.A. Expected to Fully Approve Pfizer Vaccine Next Week

New York Times - The Food and Drug Administration is pushing to approve Pfizer-BioNTech’s two-dose Covid-19 vaccine on Monday, further expediting an earlier timeline for licensing the shot, according to people familiar with the agency’s planning.

The approval is expected to pave the way for a series of vaccination requirements by public and private organizations who were awaiting firmer regulatory backing before implementing mandates. Federal and state health officials are also hoping that an approved vaccine will draw interest from some Americans who have been hesitant to take one that was only authorized for emergency use, a phenomenon suggested by recent polling. What’s in a Title? More Than Meets the Eye!

By: Wendy Hobson-Rohrer, MD, MSPH

The inconsistent use of professional titles for men and women is a common occurrence in health sciences. Titles are one of many facets of our professional identity and stature. However, my experiences as a female doctor, educator, and health care leader reveal the use or non-use of our titles has deeper implications than most of us realize.

I never assume ill intent when, in a professional setting or meeting, someone refers to me by my first name while simultaneously referring to a male colleague by his “Dr.” title. Admittedly, I sometimes catch myself doing the same thing to others. In our everyday verbal and written communications, this inconsistency has become a behavioral norm stemming from cultural, implicit, unconscious bias. Read more...

The myths and hurdles keeping girls from getting enough physical activity

Deseret News -  Angela Crawford has a unique role at Union Middle School. She’s a middle school health and physical education teacher who specializes not in basketball or volleyball, but in strength and conditioning.

She’s noticed a discouraging pattern. She’s repeatedly seen fewer girls than boys in her classrooms. This year, only about 1 in 5 students in her strength and conditioning class is female.

In fact, only 14% of Utah girls meet the recommended physical activity levels of 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous exercise set by the state, compared to 28% of boys. Recent research by Utah State University’s Utah Women & Leadership Project digs into why, combining three studies to illuminate why this deficit exists. Read more...

Demand for COVID antibody drugs soars in hard-hit states

AP - Antibody treatments remain one of a handful of therapies that can blunt the worst effects of COVID-19, and they are the only option available to people with mild-to-moderate cases who aren’t yet in the hospital.

They have risen in demand in states seeing a spike in infections, including Florida, Louisiana and Texas, where hospitalizations among the unvaccinated are overwhelming the health care system.

White House officials reported recently that federal shipments of the drugs increased five-fold last month to nearly 110,000 doses, with the vast majority going to states with low vaccination rates. Read more...
