It allowed for a day of Professional Development for teaching staff, this time focussed on Mathematics. One take-away from the session; the importance of students understanding mathematical concepts, not just trying to get the right numbers. Often, we can robotically adhere to mathematical process like a computer, not really understanding what we're doing. At Regent College, we want students to love learning - that's one part of why we teach and exist as a school. So, teaching and engaging students so that they love learning and understand what they are learning, is a key priority. We would like to thank Kristin Humphrys (Mathematics Consultant, AISWA), for her recent work with staff. Have a wonderful week! Derek Nicholls. Principal Please be advised that positions for KINDERGARTEN 2018 are now filling! Children who were born between the following dates are scheduled to commence Kindergarten 2018 (next year). 1 July 2013 - 30 June 2014 Importantly, we would like to ensure that we can accommodate current Regent College families. Please, collect an application from administration ASAP, if required. Thank you. KINDERGARTEN 1&2 Our Kindergarten classes are discovering that opportunities for using maths is all around us. This past few weeks we have been exploring shapes while finger painting and have observed length in our constructions. Some children have created musical instruments out of blocks and used them to tap rhythms, and others have discovered that all our blocks are sorted and grouped according to shape. There are possibilities for learning everywhere and every day holds new potential. We are also becoming experts at packing things away where they belong! Mrs Huxley - teacher KINDERGARTEN 3 We have settled in really well to our Kindergarten program, this term. In literacy, we have been looking at the letters of the alphabet as well as identifying the syllables in words. We are able to count out some 2 and 3 syllable words. In Mathematics, we have continued our number identification to 5 and moving onto 10. We enjoy playing lots of mathematical games and one of our favourites is bingo. Outside in our new area, we like playing construction and building towers and cities. We have been talking about lots of different emotions and different ways that we can help each other in the classroom. Mrs Stein - teacher PRE-PRIMARY In Mathematics, the Pre-primary students have been learning about Number; including recognising numerals, the order and sequence of numbers, and matching numerals to quantities. We played games such as memory, snap and bingo. We also threaded beads onto pipe cleaners to show matching quantities and numerals. Students have enjoyed exploring the use of numbers in different ways; from making pictures using different quantities of dots to creating buildings using only a certain amount of blocks. Miss Baker and Miss Shaw - teachers CLASS 1.1 In Year 1 we have had fun practicing counting up to and beyond 100, learning about what numbers make 10, and partitioning numbers into tens and ones! In Science, we have been investigating light and sound, and we have looked around the school to see what different sources of light and sound we could find. We love experimenting with all the items in our science box to see what we can do with different lights and sounds! Miss Masters - teacher CLASS 1/2 The students have been learning about some people who might be considered, 'superheroes' in the Bible. Recently, we read about Daniel and the Lions' Den. We each made a lion and learnt a Bible verse about not being afraid. In Visual Art, we finished making our jellyfish. They fit right in to our classroom ocean display. Miss Jongeling - teacher CLASS 2.1 This week in Mathematics the Year 2.1 students have been creating their own repeating patterns using materials they have chosen. They have to identify how many elements are in their patterns. Next week they will discover how some patterns grow. When they grow, they must follow a rule. Mrs Jenkins - teacher CLASS 3.1 In Mathematics this week, the Year 3.1 students have enjoyed working together to share, learn and practise strategies which will help them to be more efficient in their mental computations. Also, the students have been playing a game to consolidate the "Add 10 and adjust" strategy when adding 9. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Ellis - teachers CLASS 4.1 Recently, we were doing some mathematics on the playground equipment, identifying shapes and looking for patterns (and of course getting in some exercise and having lots of fun!) Also, some of us can be seen ‘in disguise’ in the swimming pool, enjoying our lessons and improving our strokes. Below, our pop-up art gallery - ‘Sunflowers'. Student replicas, originally by Van Gogh, were briefly on public display. Mrs Innes - teacher CLASS 5/6 In Mathematics this term, students have posed some questions and then gathered data as an investigation. They have then presented their findings in different types of graphs. The students have learnt a lot about their peers and found out some interesting things from the analyses of the data. Great team work Year 5 and 6! Below. Recently the Class 5/6 students visited Kennedy Baptist College for a morning of Science in their new labs. Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson - teachers MUSIC UPDATE Thank you to the P&F for funding for some wonderful new percussion instruments to resource our Music Program. Pictured - Year 5 Students enjoying making music with the new soprano, alto and Bass Xylophones. The Year 2.1 students enjoyed an afternoon of musical fun as part of their Day Camp. The room was filled with smiles as the students danced and sung along to some fun action songs and challenging hand clapping games. They finished off with some traditional campfire songs including ‘On top of Spaghetti’ and some African Spirituals. Year 2.1 Crazy Moose on the Loose Pose Mrs Marshall - teacher SWIM CLUB Regent students have been participating in swim club sessions after school on Mondays; building their fitness up and working on technique. The swimmers have 4 sessions remaining, perfect preparation for the up coming interschool swim carnival (YR 4-6) on Friday 31st of March. Mrs French - teacher REGENT ROYALS (NETBALL) Yesterday, Regent College's two netball teams competed against each other in this week's round of fixtures, creating our own fun and competitive derby at Victoria Park Leisure Centre. Both teams were competitive, incorporating skill and enthusiasm as a first and second place were awarded. Well done to both teams and thank you to Mrs French and Mrs Innes for overseeing the match.

AN INVITATION TO PRAY Parents are invited to participate in a prayer time for the College (including families and staff), each Tuesday morning, in the After School Care room. Young (non-school aged) children can attend with a parent. If attending, parents are required to sign in at the office following the morning bell and head directly to the After School Care room (old music room, under hall). Mrs Nelia Farquharson (Year 6 parent) is the contact, via Administration.
CYBER SAFETY Families are encouraged to take-time to explore the link below. The article outlines some good points that are worth considering for technology use at home and school. Mrs Saxton PARENT REPS The College would like to thank class parent reps for this year. Parent reps support community building within the College in various ways; including, assisting teachers with occasional class events, initiating informal get-togethers among families and prompting support for class families at various key times, e.g. new babies or other life challenges. While not all positions are yet confirmed, thank you to the following -
A special thanks to Allison Slater who is parent rep coordinator for this year. SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR Avast, me hearties!
