Western BBQ - Thank You

We all had a great time eatin', dancin' and chattin'. The food was great, the band was perfect and the down-home good time was delightful. We also had a good turn out from our friends at Coyote Point Yacht Club, as they were preparing for the big Barth Race the next day.

A Big thank you to Larry Mayne for hosting this event. Also Larry had a lot of help including Theresa Howard, Kathy Harris, Nan & Fred Wylder, Leslie and Jim Fish and Dan Doud. (I appologize if I missed someone from the list) And thanks to all who attended and were a part of this fun event.

Thanks again,

Annual Barth Race Results

The 2013 Barth Memorial Race was held on Saturday, September 21 under cloudy and very wet conditions. The race is an annual club competition between members of the Sequoia and Coyote Point Yacht Clubs. Sequoia was represented by 8 spinnaker and 5 non spinnaker boats while Coyote Point came to the line with 4 spinnaker and 2 non spinnaker boats. Nineteen boats in spinnaker and non spinnaker divisions started the race with deteriorating visibility as the rain became heavier.

Tradition calls for the race to start alternating between starting south of the San Mateo Bridge and starting near Coyote Point. This year the race started in the middle of Sequoia's normal sailing grounds south of the Bridge and after the rounding of local marks near the causeway headed north through the main span of the bridge. The fleet spread out against a strong flood tide as the course took the boats up the shipping channel to marker #8 followed by a turn into the shallow waters closer to the airport to a CPYC marker Z. Finally it was time for the spinnaker boats to hoist their kites and head out to channel marker #6 followed by the non spinnaker boats. With shifting winds the tacticians aka skippers had to plan their approach carefully to make the fastest route to the upwind finish at the Coyote Point breakwater.

Congratulations Sequoia Yacht Club for an overall win and retention of the contested DeWitt painting with 16 points to Coyote Point's 41. Although this is a team event congratulations to the first three finishers in the spinnaker division Smokin J (Mark Bettis, CPYC), Dare Dare (Nico Popp, SYC) and Head Rush (Peter Weigt, SYC), respectively. In the non-spinnaker division congratulations to the first three finishers in Made Easy (Jim Peterson, SYC), Hot Ice (Mike Haddock, CPYC) and Don't Tell My Wife (Larry Mayne, SYC).

Race results and Series Results are posted on the Sequoia Yacht Club web site.

Wow! What an amazing day and turn out for our 3rd annual Coastal Cleanup Day. We picked up trash,  rain or shine. We managed to pick up close to a half a ton of trash and recyclables (Wow!). The volunteers worked so hard and they really made a difference. The data cards they recorded will provide valuable insight to pollution in our environments and over time will be information that will identify issues and trends that will require action, by us, our cities, counties and state.

Also a very special thank you to Dan Rupinski with Oracle, for inviting his colleagues to participate and introducing them to the Port of Redwood City. I think he has paved new ground that many of us can learn from in getting our employers and co-workers involved. Thank you Dan!

For San Mateo County, the preliminary numbers are:

• 3,601 volunteers
• 2,812 pounds of recycling
• 20,975 pounds of trash

For the entire state (with 70% of the reports in), the preliminary numbers are:

• 51,543 volunteers
• 30,530unds of recycling
• 501,748 pounds of trash

I love how this club rallies around a cause and is so supportive. You made me proud to be a member of Sequoia Yacht Club and you made this a real special day for me and so many others. We were part of something huge which is making a difference around the globe.

Thanks again for your help in making trash extinct.
