Date: April 30, 2026

A single-dose chikungunya live attenuated vaccine (CHIK-LAV, trade name IXCHIQ®) is authorized for use in Canada and is available for private purchase in Ontario.

This memo is intended for health care providers whose patients have:

  • Received CHIK-LAV, or
  • Requested a prescription for CHIK-LAV

Monitoring of CHIK-LAV Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFIs)

  • According to the Committee to Advise on Tropical Medicine and Travel (CATMAT), global post-marketing surveillance has identified reports of serious adverse events following immunization with CHIK-LAV, primarily among individuals 65 years of age and older with underlying medical conditions

Health Care Provider Action

  • Report any suspected adverse events following immunization associated with CHIK-LAV through the usual AEFI reporting process
  • Encourage patients travelling to tropical and sub-tropical areas where arboviruses (e.g. chikungunya, dengue, Zika) are present to review travel advice and advisories by destination
  • Consult CATMAT’s guidance when assessing patients requesting a prescription for CHIK-LAV
