Another fun holiday event was held last Sunday at the Club, the Annual Children's Christmas Party. This year it was organized by our new Vice Commodore Dan Lockwood and his wife Sue with help and support by our Social Chair Kathy Harris.

It was a fun afternoon with crafts and goodies followed by the amazing and always entertaining Magic Mike. He amazed the children and entertained the adults with his skilled magic and his clever wit.

Mike even made it snow inside of the club just in time for Santa Claus to arrive by boat with a bag of goodies for all of the children. I also understand it was Santa's birthday so we were very lucky to have him visit our club on his special day.

After Santa got back in his sleigh (boat) and rode out of sight, the kids settled in to play with their gifts and the adults enjoyed a pot luck dinner together, with lots of treats from many who donated to the feast.

Someone once said, that anything you do for a child is never wasted, so it is good that we continue this tradition for the children of our club.

Thank you to all who helped put this event and afternooon together, especially Kathy Harris, Terry Burley, Dan Humphreys, Diedre Sparks, LuAnne Graves, and Dan and Sue Lockwood.

The Holiday Lighted Boat Parade is this Friday!

Ahoy Holiday Boat Paraders!

Redwood Cup race #2 is this Saturday.

The skippers' meeting is at noon and the race starts between day mark 20 and the dolphin at 1:30.  Depending on the expected wind, the race committee is considering changing the SIs to extend the time limit from 5:00 to 5:30 for the remaining races in the Redwood Cup series. A decision will be made at the skippers' meeting on Saturday after getting input from participants.  Please attend the meeting to find out or email us to weigh in with your thoughts.

With this race, we are going online with race registrations and result reporting! The link to information and registration for the Redwood Cup Series is: http://www.jibeset.net/SEQYC000.php?RG=T008790362

All the participants and results from Redwood Cup #1 have been entered into the system. If you participated in Redwood Cup #1, you are already registered.

Please note your finish time (preferred) or the names of the boats ahead and behind you so you can report them to the race committee at the club after the race.  The bar will be open and the fire will be roaring.  Or you can text or email them to 650-346-4864 or trailmaven@me.com as soon after the finish as possible.

If you track your race with a smart phone or a GPS device, please send it to trailmaven@me.com.  The race committee will add all tracks to Tack Tracker so you can see the race play out on-screen.  Exciting tactical moves will be there for all to see.  The more who participate, the more fun.

Sequoia YC and the San Mateo History Museum

The San Mateo History Museum in Redwood City is the premier museum for illustrating the history of California. Their exhibits include all aspects of the many changes in the Bay area from the Spanish discovery through to current times.  Of particular interest to a yacht club is the history of boating since the SF Bay was discovered and the first map was made by the San Carlos sailing vessel of Spain. It is also a very interesting building with a beautiful architectural design and started life as the Courthouse before it became the Museum.

The Museum is doing a major update of the sailing exhibit which includes examples of ships of many eras from the San Carlos to the present time as well as boating artifacts and navigation maps. The museum asked for our support. We are making a donation to the museum to support the official opening of this new exhibit which takes place on Sunday March 16th. In return we asked for PR activity to support Sequoia YC as it is our 75th anniversary year in 2014. In addition the Port of Redwood City is sponsoring the new museum catalogue. The Port and Sequoia YC are recognized as  the two official sponsors of this new exhibit and its opening day.

What will take place on March 16th? There are two events – a children’s event from 12-3 which includes model boat building, knot tying, basic navigation and lots of fun activities. Sequoia junior sailing and the Sea Scouts will be assisting with this. We also plan to have an El Toro and a Laser there – great photo ops for children and to show them what junior sailing can be like! The adults are encouraged to attend. There is then an official opening for adults which takes place from 3.30 – 5 including a ribbon cutting ceremony. Sequoia members are invited and the Flag will all be there.

We also requested that our club have a display in the museum commemorating the 75th anniversary of Sequoia YC. The Museum agreed and this exhibit will be set up in the main rotunda entrance with a photographic display. This is being put together now and will be on show from the end of January to May. This is a big deal and obviously will get us lots of positive PR. In addition, the Sailing exhibit opening day will be promoted strongly by the Museum and Sequoia benefits from this PR as well.

We agreed to sponsor the opening day for $2500 of which Sequoia YC is putting forward $1,000 and the Flag and others are donating as well. Sequoia YC agreed to make sure it would make good any gap between the $1,000 and personal donations so the $2500 was fully met. This is money well spent as it is one more important step in putting our club in a strong position in the local community generating good PR and will also be visible to many potential new members.

You will all be invited to the Opening day and if you have not seen the museum – I would encourage you to take an hour or two to go see it beforehand. You will then be as excited about the opening day as we are and can see the Sequoia display once it is set up at end of January. Also if you would like to help support this opening day with a donation – please contact Sequoia Office and we shall be pleased to assist you.

We are really excited about this – it is good for Sequoia, great for the community and a fine example of the spirit we bring to all that we do

Peter – your Staff Commodore..

New Cruise-in Chair

One of the things we would like to promote this year is to have other clubs cruise in to the Sequoia Yacht Club. To that end we started developing our event calendar for 2014 earlier this year. Next we developed a letter, with the help of Shannon Amerman, inviting other clubs to come to the South Bay to visit us.

Last month, we sent a special email invitiation to nearly 100 yacht clubs in Northern California inviting them to visit us here at Sequoia Yacht Club. We have already started to hear from several clubs that are interested in visiting us.

While organizing guest berthing is the Port Captain's job, there are many other things that need to be attended to when we have visiting clubs. So I have decided to form a Cruise-In Committee and Past Commodore Petra Gilmore has agreed to serve as chair. We have also set up a new email alias that we can use for visiting yacht clubs to communicate with us at cruisein@sequoiayc.org

I look forward to us not only having great cruise-outs this year but to have great cruise-ins as well. Petra will be looking for help as we welcome visiting clubs to our Club in 2014.
