But there are also the intangibles of the work we do to promote our region and our businesses. Whilst you might not see this, it does happen. So back to Ghostbusters, and who you going to call? We thought this would be an important opportunity for you so of course we said yes, and immediately kicked into gear to get it sorted. Come along and hear what the Minister of Finance has to say and ask your questions – Register here. We look forward to seeing you there because they called your one and only Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce. The following news is provided to keep our business leaders up to date. PM announces changes to portfolios ![]() Paul Goldsmith will take on responsibility for the Media and Communications portfolio, while Louise Upston will pick up the Disability Issues portfolio, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced today. “Our Government is relentlessly focused on getting New Zealand back on track. As issues change in prominence, I plan to adjust Ministerial responsibilities to make sure we are best set up to deliver for New Zealanders. “It has become clear in recent months that there are significant challenges in the media sector. Similarly, we have discovered major financial issues with programmes run by the Ministry of Disabled People. “I have come to the view it is important to have senior Cabinet Ministers considering these issues. “There are significant synergies between the Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio and Media and Communications – as such, I’ve asked Paul Goldsmith to take the lead on media issues for the Government. Minister welcomes hydrogen milestone ![]() Energy Minister Simeon Brown has welcomed an important milestone in New Zealand’s hydrogen future, with the opening of the country’s first network of hydrogen refuelling stations in Wiri. “I want to congratulate the team at Hiringa Energy and its partners K one W one (K1W1), Mitsui & Co New Zealand Limited, and Green Impact Partners for reaching this important milestone,” Mr Brown says. “Hydrogen can play an important role in decarbonising a number of industries and sectors, such as fertiliser and methanol production, and potentially steel production. “Hydrogen could also have great potential for decarbonising heavy road transport. Road transport carries over 90% of our domestic goods by weight and is a crucial sector for our economy and exports. ![]() UK Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism - April 2024 ![]() The UK Government has announced a plan to introduce its own carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) by 2027. The UK CBAM will impose a tariff on a range of high-carbon goods imported from countries with weaker emissions regulations to prevent carbon leakage and protect UK firms from being undercut by less-regulated foreign competitors. The tariff will apply to imports from a range of high[1]carbon sectors including iron, steel, aluminium, ceramics, glass, fertiliser, cement and hydrogen. Like its EU equivalent, the UK CBAM as currently envisioned will not apply to agricultural/food and beverage products ![]()
