Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

I cannot believe it is April already!

And what a March it was.  Between St. Patrick’s Day and Belly Dancing, Sequoia was jumping!  Thank you to all who came and drank and dined and danced at our club.  Your support makes such exotic, globe-trotting extravaganzas possible!  Thank you also to our volunteers.

Another quick mention before diving into upcoming events:  there was a very special rental in the club this weekend.  Jerry and Sheila Jones celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary last Sunday.  And while that is an amazing milestone, their son Greg also married his long-time sweetheart Megan.    It was a very special ceremony that was simple and moving and fun.  And did I mention moving?  The food, music, and custom hot-stamped matchboxes were also excellent.

Upcoming Events:

Next Monday April 7th:  PICYA Delegates Meeting at Sequoia Yacht Club:   Who knows what these folks do when they gather together.  The mind reels at the possibilities…  I have been asked to attend so I will report on this event in next weeks’ Blast!

Beer Can Races are kicking off with a meeting and dinner on April 9th!  Racing starts April 16!  Call up some friends, meet at the club and go sailing!

On April 11th we have a Cruise-In (Sausalito Yacht Club), Drop-In- Dinner and a General Meeting.  The menu will feature a Meatball Madness theme (spaghetti, salad, garlic bread) and will be served at a budget friendly $ 7.50 anniversary price.

On Friday, April 25th we have our Sequoia Rocks! event.  We will have dinner and dancing with the band Classic Vinyl.

The next morning, April 26th, we have Club Clean-up!  A list of task is being carefully written with jobs for all skill levels.  Sugary energy snacks and beverages will be provided.

See you at the club.

Redwood Cup Series Wrap-up

The fifth and final race of Sequoia YC's 2013-2014 Redwood Cup series on Saturday had just a dozen boats competing in the inclement weather.

Stan Phillips on the Farr 30 Frequent Flyer led all boats to take first place honors in this last race with Mike Reed's Express 27 Magic close behind in second while Tim Anto's Melgas 24 Daredevil slipped into third place.

For the entire Redwood Cup Series, Charlie Watt's Antrim 27 Head Rush took first place with 8 points, Magic came in second with 10 points, and Tracy Rogers' J/92 Relentless placed third with 11.

For more details and a blow-by-blow report, visit the NorCal site. Race and series results are posted on the SYC website

Congratulations to all racers on a well-fought and fun series!

Cathy Moyer and Kathy Conte, Redwood Cup Fleet Captains

The Summer Series is here!

And with it (but maybe not for race #1) we expect something different - wind!

This Saturday, April 5, is Summer Series #1 - 5 races with one throwout. Skipper's meeting at 11:30 and race start on the Bay at 13:30. Check the Club website for the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions. Boat counts are up and racing has been more fun than ever. Expect some surprises for this boisterous series!

Your Race Fleet Captains are now using Jibeset.net and registrations are being taken online; try it out. But no worries Mate, we can help on race day if you wish. For race tracking, download a new app on your smartphone or iPad called RaceQs and watch your Avatar (boat symbol) roll and move with other boats in the fleet. Of course if you have a drone....

See you Saturday.

John Draeger,
Summer Series Fleet Captain

Mega Cruise Planning Meeting April 10

Many of you have asked that we have another planning meeting for our 2014 Mega-Cruise to the San Juan Islands. We have decided to hold it on Thursday April 10th at 7pm at the Club. We have been busy making plans and I know many of you have your boats reserved and are looking forward to the trip. I also know there are still a few people who would like to go but don’t have a boat and there may be folks looking for crew. I believe there are still some boats available, so it is not too late if you are interested in chartering a boat and joining us. The dates are August 18-22nd and we are chartering with Anacortes Yacht Charters. The web address for more information can be found here: http://www.anacortesyachtcharters.com/

Special hats have already been ordered and will be available for sale for $20 at the meeting.  They are the same great HatTail hats we had for our Turkey cruise, but are updated for the 75th Anniversary and our trip. There is a limited supply. Please feel free to come to the meeting if you are planning to go or if you are just interested. It should be a great cruise for all.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

South Bay Opening Day is coming...

Hello Members,

I am thrilled about the attendance at our social events and on-the-water events this year.  Our club is growing and becoming "the place to be" for all of us and our guests.

I am asking for help on May 3rd for South Bay Opening Day at our club.  SYC is hosting a breakfast and a lunch that day that is open to the public.

Please let me know if you can help in the galley for breakfast.  It will be a traditional breakfast that Larry is so good at…pancakes, eggs and sausage…or something very similar. We need 3 volunteers to help Larry in the Galley and 1 to sell tickets in dining room in the morning.

Lunch will be a barbecue of hamburgers and vege burgers with drinks and chips.  We need 3 volunteers to prepare the condiments, barbecue and serve guests their burger and 1 to sell the lunch tickets by the back gate.

Please email me to pitch in and do your part for SBOD.

I am so excited about our theme this year…"South Bay Magic".  Let's really shine and show the magic of Sequoia Yacht Club.

Thanks,

Kathy Harris, Social Chair
