No Images? Click here Look who's back! Professor Jane Clarke and her husband Chris chatted with Wolfson alumnus Eric Monkman, Captain of the hugely popular 2017 University Challenge team, at the May Ball, Valhalla. The Easter term brought together Wolfson members for a series of events celebrating summer, sports and Wolfson's spirit and successes. The highlights? Alumni, including members of the original University College Boat Club, gathered at Osier Holt in Fen Ditton to cheer on our four boats in our best ever May Bumps. Families, Fellows, alumni and students mingled and munched on strawberries at the annual Benefactors' Reception and College Garden Party, entertained by the CU Brass Band and the College Choir. The May Ball was a true spectacle, attracting hundreds of students and members from Cambridge and beyond (see below). And the President and Governing Body hosted former University Vice-Chancellor and Honorary Fellow Sir Leszek Borysiewicz on the award of his Honorary Doctorate from the University. The Women's W1 boat coxed by Justin Yang, with Larkin Sayre (stroke) and Mathilde Jensen. The crew bladed, as did the Mens' first and second boats.
Triumphs for our Boat ClubThe May Bumps topped off a very successful year for the College Boat Club, fittingly in its 50th anniversary year. Three of four boats bladed, and Wolfson won both the Pegasus and Michell Cups. With many of our strongest rowers returning to the College next year we can look forward to repeating this impressive showing, so keep an eye out for your invitation to the Bumps in 2019. If you live near Cambridge, consider joining our very friendly Social Rowing Team. Wolfson Press FellowshipThe Wolfson Press Fellowship has had another great cohort of visiting Fellows this year. Five journalists from abroad spent 10 weeks at Wolfson this term under the guidance of Emeritus Fellow Professor John Naughton. During their time here they worked on individual projects, visited newsrooms, met with well-known members of the media and publishing industries — and even made time to take tea and scones at the Orchard Tea Rooms in Grantchester. Students take some time out of revision to de-stress in the Lee Hall with comfort dogs brought in by WCSA. Student SpotlightThe Wolfson College Students' Association (WCSA) — headed up by President Brian Robertson and Vice-President Ibrahim Mohammed — had a full schedule of activities and initiatives this year. From consultations on the cafeteria service and Club Room refurbishment to offering support to students during revision time and Ramadan, WCSA contributed a great deal to the life of the College this year. A Great Year for Wolfson AthletesFrom football to tiddlywinks, this was a winning year for Wolfson athletes. Neuroscience PhD student and WCSA Sports & Societies Officer Gunther Klobe takes us through a year of sporting hits (and a few misses). May Ball 2018Inspired by the Nordic theme Valhalla, light projections against the walls of the Dining Hall and Club Room carried on until dawn, while giant flames soared up from the roof to the sounds of the Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin. This year's May Ball was a truly spectacular event complete with gladiators, pyrotechnics, giant swings, a live raven and a groaning cheese board. Music was performed in four different venues around the College, with the legendary reggae band Inner Circle headlining on the main stage. Over 900 people attended and all agreed that the May Ball Committee — with the help of the hard-working College staff — did a great job both at the dinner and the indoor/outdoor festivities.
