The Half Moon Bay Cruise Out

Blue Water Sailing

Coming Home to the Golden Gate

Joseph and Oya Curtis, Byron Jacobs

View from Half Moon Bay Yacht Club

Sequoia cruisers normally go offshore over Labor Day weekend and this year saw a great cruise out to Half Moon Bay.

John and Luanne Graves organized the event and did so flawlessly.

It is about 9 hours each way depending on tides and weather so most people take their boat up to the North Bay on Friday to enjoy a fun sail and good repartee before heading down the coast.

This Friday gave you a lot of options - some enterprising folks anchored at Clipper Cove to enjoy a glorious sun filled afternoon and evening with NO traffic noise from the Bay Bridge - this will not happen again so a fine moment. Others enjoyed South Beach and their hospitality. Aquatic Park remains a favorite and you get to see the intrepid swimmers to Alcatraz as you leave the harbor. No casualties reported! The SFYC hosted the international Knarr annual championship. 40 Knarrs were brought in from around the world and made a magnificent sight and a great evening.

The Saturday morning started with a thick fog over the Golden Gate - the British call this a pea souper! You hear the Golden Gate foghorn, you barely see the Golden Gate. No matter - we motor sailed through the fog and then sailed down the coast arriving in Pillar Point in good order by 3 to 4 pm. A Pot luck dinner plus the Half Moon Bay YC provided the evenings entertainment - which was good!

Sunday was a sunny and warm day with no coastal fog. There was lots of fun on the boats, on the dinghies, in Half Moon Bay Village and of course enjoying a very vibrant and social scene at the Half Moon Bay YC. We finished the day with a team dinner at Flavor which was excellent. Rumor has it that Pied Piper hosted after dinner drinks.... Just a great day!

Monday saw low visibility out of Half Moon Bay but no issues and most timed it right to arrive in the North Bay by 11am to watch the AC45's and the Junior Sailing race which was exciting. I like those AC45's! 12 boats were contending and it was a spirited race. The Kiwi's have the lead but the top seven teams are separated by just three points. The Junior Sailing program will go down to the last race!

We saw all sorts of weather - we bathed in sunshine and sailed through fog. We laughed, we had great company. We enjoyed fine food and hospitality. Most important - we were out on our boats having a great time  - just a great Labor Day cruise for Sequoia!!

Coastal Cleanup Day - September 21, 2013

Coastal Cleanup Day is a great event for your entire family... in fact, for everyone! Invite your friends to join you in helping to keep our creeks, rivers, lakes, coast, and ocean clean, healthy, and safe for all of us.

On Saturday, September 21st from 9am-Noon cleanups will take place at the Sequoia Yacht Club and more than 800 other locations throughout California.

Help us reduce waste at the Cleanup. Bring Your Own reusable cleanup supplies from home, like a bucket or reusable bag and work gloves, and we can cut down on the disposable items that we use at the cleanup! We will have additional buckets, bags and t-shirts.

Thanks for all you do to protect California's coastal resources. We look forward to seeing you on California Coastal Cleanup Day!

San Francisco YC Cruise Out - October 12/13

Ahoy Sequoia

It time to sign in for the San Francisco YC cruise out - always one of our most popular destinations.

We selected October 11/12/13 for this years adventure and it will be a great weekend!

If people would like to sail up on Friday 11th we shall absolutely accomodate that but we are expecting most on Saturday 12th. I shall be there early to welcome you all. We would depart Sunday about midday but there is no rush - sailing in the North Bay gets really good!

As well as docktails at about 4.30pm we have organised cocktails in the Commodores room before the dinner on Saturday 12th at 5.30pm. I plan to have a guest to speak to us and will keep that a surprise.

Dinner is at 7.30 in the main dining room. The menu is as follows:

Caeser Salad

Chicken Coq au Vin with pancetta bacon, mushrooms and pearl onions. Served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. We can order a vegetarian as needed.

Dessert is Chocolate Decadence

Coffee / Tea included

The costs is $40 a head for dinner plus wines which you would order separately. I am assuming all cruisers and guests will join us for dinner. The mooring fees are as last time - a dollar a foot.

Breakfast is also available in the club - just let me know if you want that organised or will make your own arrangements.

What I would appreciate from all interested is your Boat name and dimensions plus number of guests. Black Toppers are very welcome. This is a very popular cruise out so please let me know quickly so we do not disappoint anyone.

I look forward to hosting a great cruise out for all of you!
