£5 For 5 Days

Children come on to the streets with nothing. To survive they have to scavenge for food, beg, sell their bodies or commit crime. Living off a few pennies, they are manipulated and abused by others and end up relying on solvents and drugs to fight their fear and hunger.

Our partners in South Africa, Tanzania, Burundi and India bring hope to these children, reaching them where they are, journeying with them and providing them with a chance to leave the streets, to go back home and have a future.

I met Msizi when I visited Umthombo in Durban, South Africa earlier this year. He told me that after running away from home, he would hide from police and ‘bad people,’ he would run from thunder and lightning.

“I followed the road for nearly 200km until the road ended at the sea in Durban.

I love Soccer, surfing and with Umthombo’s help, I am going back to my home to love with my family. Umthombo have helped all of us.”

For Children like Msizi, to hear that people around the world care about him is mind-blowing. He cannot believe that people he has never met, in other countries so far away, want to stand in solidarity with him, to demand rights for street children and support the programmes that rebuild his hopes.

I would love for you to join me and the Amos family in trying to live on £1 each day for 5 days. Let us know you are doing in by signing up here. It would be great to share your stories and your experiences – I think it will help to know that we are all hungry together. I know I will find it encouraging when I feel in need of a 70p chocolate bar I can’t afford.

Amos Community Engagement Manager Katie and her family have already completed their £5 For 5 Days. Read about how her family found the experience here.

I will be donating what I don’t spend on groceries during the week of the 19th – 23rd to Amos’ street child partners. My average weekly shop for two of us could pay for a child who has travelled long distances to be supported and reintegrated back with their family.

If the thought of living on £1 a day for 5 days isn’t your cup of tea or you are unable to join in but would like to support those who are taking part, do feel free to make a donation.

If you would prefer to complete this challenge on a different week, do feel free to and let us know how you get on.

Thank you and good luck!
