Be a marine biologist for the day, join a circus workshop or be a budding Bear Grylls at the Survivor Challenge. Delivered by qualified educators and suitable for children aged six to 12 years. NEWS GREEN DAY AT BILGOLA Staff from the Coastal Environment Centre, together with teachers and students from Bilgola Public School, recently enjoyed a fun-filled Green Day at the school. Students learnt about keeping our local waterways clean, looking after wildlife and the importance of our native bees. They also made their own beeswax wraps, using these the very next day, replacing plastic wrap in their lunchboxes. WATER FOR WILDLIFE As we move into summer, it is good to remember our thirsty wildlife. By putting fresh water out daily in a shady spot at the bottom of your garden, this will keep our native fauna hydrated. A bowl of water can also be hung from trees for possums and birds to quench their thirst, saving them from coming to the ground where they may be at risk of attack. TRACKING APP FOR FROGS Did you know there are smart phone apps available to record your sightings of frogs, turtles and pest species? Frog ID is being described as an 'urgent rescue mission' to save frogs that are vulnerable or endangered. Council would also love to receive details of your sightings whether native or exotic by emailing PROTECTING OUR WILDLIFE While we all love our local wildlife, some species are in unnaturally high numbers as a result of urban development and the kind-heartedness of some individuals. Please refrain from feeding wildlife as this can inflate their numbers at the expense of other species; can cause or spread disease; displace other local species and sometimes create unnatural or nuisance behaviour. LIVING SUSTAINABLY SWAP THIS FOR THAT Make the change and help wipe out single use plastics on the Northern Beaches. Always remember to BYO a reuseable water bottle and coffee cup when you’re out and about and do your part to end single use plastic pollution. Water stations for refills will be available at all Council run events. |
