I had a terrific time at South Bay Opening Day and I hope all of our members had a similarly great experience.

I think our Club and our South Bay boating community showed really well on Saturday.  One of the themes I wanted to emphasize is the breadth and strength of Sequoia’s youth sailing program:  our Sequoia youth sailing in their el toros in the parade, the older kids prepping for their afternoon regatta, and the presence of the two Sea Scout ships showed off our youth programs.  Peter Blackmore and Joshua Gilliland of the Sea Scouts really brought the programs to life with their comments.  Winston Bumpus brought small boat sailing to life with his Jack London story.

As far as the entire weekend, I think our affiliated clubs – San Leandro, Peninsula and South Bay Yacht Clubs contributed tremendous talent and experience to the undertaking.  I am especially indebted to Judi and Lilley from Peninsula for taking on the registrations and award and prize gathering.

I am also very grateful to my fellow Sequoia members for making our program run so smoothly and making the day so memorable.  (In an attempt to list those who contributed to the effort, I will no doubt miss somebody.  For that I apologize in advance.)

I have to admit, I was preoccupied with the parade and on speakers and outside exhibitors.   Inside meal prep, clean up, cooking and bar-tending ran very smoothly.  My thanks to the following individuals who contributed to the house side of Saturday:

Winston Bumpus
Carole Bumpus
Cliff Kramer
Larry Mayne
Robin Mayne
Bernie Wahl
Olivia Sadlowski

The Winning Boat

Our annual South Bay Opening Day was another great success. Sequoia YC hosts this event with the support of many other clubs in the South Bay and the Port of Redwood City that rally round to contribute.

It was a glorious day starting bright and early with the Sequoia team serving breakfast to well over 100 attendees. At 10am the official festivities then started and we were honored to have Rear Admiral Karl Schultz of the Coast Guard as our Grand Marshal this year. The Sea Scouts, led by Joshua Gilliland raised the colors and we had a rousing national anthem from Steve Stanley on trumpet followed by a blessing (suitably modified to be truly nautical) by our own Reverend Terry Burley. The cannon roared with perfect timing thanks to David Payne.

The boat parade was a huge success and our comperes David Bliven and Rick Gilmore kept us both amused and up to date with everything that was happening.

An excellent lunch followed at our club accompanied by the band Point of Order and the prize giving, thanks to our judges:  Judy Esteban - USCGA; Lenora Clark - Commodore PICYA, Richard Clark of the Ebony Boat Club.

A huge thank you to the fantastic volunteers from Sequoia who did an outstanding job with all the food, the bar and just being extremely hospitable. Dan Lockwood our Rear Commodore did a great job leading this massive effort with the support of many folks.

We have a great club and it shows!

Summer Series #3 Saturday, June 1

The Sequoia Yacht Club 2013 Summer Series continues on Saturday, June 1 with Race #3.

This is a five-race series with one throw-out race. The start line for the Summer Series is at 3 - 4 and the start time is 12:30. All skippers should attend the skipper's meeting at 10:30 on the day of the race. Plan on racing rain or shine but put on plenty of sunscreen.

With only two races completed with one throw-out there is still plenty of time to charge to the front.

Come on out for some of the best sailing of the year. I'll look for you at the start line.

Regards,
Richard Butts
