The importance of correctly pronouncing Māori words

A high school student's speech on the importance of pronouncing Māori words correctly has got everyone talking. Finnian Galbraith (Year 11) of Kāpiti College wrote a speech on Te Reo for a speech competition - he posted the video online this week. Watch it here.

 
 

Successful Māori stage show tours Beijing

Chinese audiences are expected to be wowed for the first time in Beijing by a highly acclaimed Māori stage show touring there this month.

The Atamira Dance Company are taking their successful show - Moko - to the highly esteemed Beijing Dance Festival.

The tour comes after it premiered just over a year ago at Sky City Theatre, to rave reviews. Read more here.

Tourist tax to fix budget holes

Charges and taxes on tourists coming to Rotorua and other regional cities could be used to plug budget deficits, says a review of local government funding.

Other suggestions include the creation of "special zones" to test ideas for economic growth, and a call to simplify the process for applying for rates rebates.

Point nine of the review will "allow councils to levy specific charges and taxes on visitors where economically efficient". Read more here.

 
 

Visitor arrivals set to reach 3 million a year

In the latest international travel and migration figures from Statistics New Zealand, visitor arrivals reached record levels for June, up 9 percent from the same period last year.

It brought the total for the June 2015 year to 2.99 million, up 7 percent from 2014.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive Kevin Bowler said this time next year, annual arrivals would be well over 3 million, with the coming summer looking set to be even busier than this year's. Read more here.

International Visitor Arrivals to New Zealand: June 2015

International Visitor Arrivals to New Zealand is a monthly report that includes detailed tables and graphs of monthly and annual data showing the number and characteristics of visitor arrivals.

Visitor arrival data comes from Statistics NZ's International Travel and Migration dataset. This dataset is derived from information contained in electronic records supplied by the New Zealand Customs Service, as well as from arrival and departure cards completed by passengers. Could pop up hotels be the next big accom trend?

Dutch company Flexotels has invented collapsible hotel rooms equipped with bathroom facilities that could be taking over the festival and event market next summer.

The fold-out rooms have a shower, hot water heater, toilet and sink to provide event participants, visitors and personnel with more convenient shelter. Read more here.
