We are part of a groundbreaking programme funded by UK aid to address the barriers that prevent millions of people with disabilities from accessing mainstream job markets. Our team visited Lagos, Nigeria to learn about the challenges to seeking employment from 20 self-advocates from Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN). What do you think about inclusive education? Self-advocates at the Conference of State Parties Empower Us Action Team members, Luis Gabriel, Colombia, and Tia Nelis, USA, describe their experiences of their week at COSP. They share their highlights and what they learned at the United Nations in New York. Everyone has the Right to Read The right to read can be realized for people with intellectual disabilities when we achieve the technical ability to transform texts into plain language formats. "The Right to Read, the Marrakesh Treaty, and People with Intellectual Disabilities" authored by our President, Sue Swenson, discusses the benefits of plain language and is now available to view online. Inclusion International Leader appointed City Council Councillor Mark Mapemba, Inclusion International Council Member (Self-advocate Representative for Africa and Officer) and Empower Us Action Team Member has been appointed City Council Councillor responsible for persons with disabilities in Blantyre, Malawi. Self-Advocates remember the Sagamihara Attack Self-advocates met in Yokohama, Japan to discus their dreams and aspirations while remembering the Sagamihara Attack, which took place three years ago, killing 19 persons with intellectual disabilities living at the care facility in the suburbs of Tokyo. Empower Us Training in Namibia Empower Us Action Team member and our Regional Representative for Africa, Mark Mapemba, led training for self-advocates in Namibia with our Inclusion Africa member NACD. German self-advocates unite! 700 participants from all over Germany came together and adopted the Leipzig Declaration, which outlines the results and demands of the congress. Sara Pickard, our Regional Representative for Europe, led an Empower Us CRPD training for 75 self-advocates. Empower Us Training in USA During Keystone’s Self-advocacy Summit in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Empower Us Action Team members, Jaime Cruz, Peru, and Tia Nelis, USA, led a training for self-advocates who work with our member Keystone Human services. |
