Fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day

Thanks to effective campaigning by Seafarers UK and the active participation of Merchant Navy Association members, on 3 September, Red Ensigns were flown at more than one thousand locations ashore across the UK. Even the Prime Minister got involved! Boris Johnson wrote: ‘2019 marks the centenary of King George V’s grant of the title ‘Merchant Navy’. I am delighted that, in honour of this milestone, the Red Ensign flag will fly above 10 Downing Street on this Merchant Navy Day.’ Find out more about the campaign.

Seafarers UK in the limelight at Maritime UK National Awards

Seafarers UK has won the STEM Award at the first national Maritime UK Awards event, held in Southampton on Thursday 19 September. The award was for our Marine Engineering Pathway project, delivered in partnership with Sea Cadets. Read more about the gala evening, award and collaboration.

Successful Seafarers’ Welfare Conference at London International Shipping Week

How do we help the seafarer of the future? This was the question at the centre of discussions at a successful conference on 11 September about ‘The Impact of Technology on Crew Wellbeing’. The event was attended by over 240 delegates from various organisations within the maritime industries. Read more.

Maritime Careers Promotion supported by Department for Transport

During London International Shipping Week, 9-13 September, the Department for Transport announced a grant of £250,000 to build on the achievements of the Maritime Careers Promotion Forum, chaired by Seafarers UK CEO Catherine Spencer. This will enable Maritime UK to grow its secretariat to include a dedicated Careers Promotion and Outreach Manager, with new print and digital resources to be produced. Learn more.

Annual National Service for Seafarers, 9 October

The Annual National Service for Seafarers is an opportunity to commemorate and celebrate all seafarers from across the maritime profession, alongside representatives of all sectors of the seafaring community.
