On Sunday, March 9th, Take a tour of the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation in Woodside

This very special tour has been arranged by Sue Lockwood.  We will have room for 30 people to tour buildings exhibiting over 240 military vehicles and special weapons from before WWI up to present day. Many of them are literally one of a kind - and most of them have been restored to running condition.

Mosey on over to www.mvtf.org and check out some of these fearsome machines.  The cost will be $ 20.00 per person, $ 10.00 if you are younger than 12 or older than 65.  Our tour is scheduled for 1:00 PM.   Due to space constraints we will need to carpool.  Our plan is to meet at SYC at around 12:00 and head up the hill together.   A sign-up sheet will be put up this week.

ed. - I did this tour 2 weeks ago and it's astounding! And by the end of this year there will never be an opportunity to see so many tanks, armored vehicles and special weapons in one place again. The collection is being broken up with most vehicles going to a Massachusetts military museum. You don't want to miss this.

The 2014 Winter Series Race #4

The 2014 Winter Series continues next week on Saturday, February 8 with race #4.

Reminder, the race will be held rain or shine.  It looks like we should have some good wind and maybe a few badly needed rain drops.  So grab your foulies and come racing.

The skipper's meeting is at 11:30am at the Club and the start line is at 3 - 4 with a scheduled start time of 13:30.

Visit the Sequoia YC Display at the Museum

Ahoy Sequoia

It is my pleasure to invite you to visit the San Mateo History Museum in Redwood City this Sunday 9th February and see our display. This is having rave reviews and is well worth a visit. Our display is in the main entrance hall and has photos of adult sailing and also children's sailing activities plus write ups of the club.

The plan is as follows: -

Assemble between  1.45 - 2.00pm at the Museum.
See the display and also take advantage of a Museum tour by the Curator between 2.00 - 3.00 pm
Snacks and drinks in a private room between 3.00 - 4.00pm
Depart 4.00pm (as the Museum closes then)

The cost - just the normal entrance fee to the Museum which is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and $3 for children over the age of 6. Under 6 there is no charge

The address is 2200 Broadway in Redwood City and there is a parking garage a block away.

The will be a casual but fun outing - I look forward to seeing you there. Please do me a favor and send me an email (click here) if you plan to come so we get the snacks and drinks numbers right!

Note From Agave Azul

(ed. - Robin and Kathryn Weber, members afloat, send a note and pictures from their new port of call in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.)

We've been doing some racing while we've been in Banderas Bay.  We raced in the Baja Ha-Ha Blast when we first arrived and did pretty well.  We decided to join the Vallarta Cup in the Cruising class, a series of 4 Saturday races in January.  We had mostly light air until the final race, and with our big chute we did well … in fact we won!  We feel really good about that, but we wish the competition had been stronger.

A Salute from and to the Past – 75 Years Ago

As we continue to celebrate our 75th Anniversary of our great club it is fun to look back upon our history and early beginnings. Our club historian, Peter Nardini, passed along to me a copy of an old sailing magazine. It seems that in August of 1939 a magazine was launched for sailors in the South Bay called the Peninsula Yachtsman. In this “Maiden Voyage” edition there was a salute to a “Sailor – Dentist”, 32 year old Dr. August Fromm, our first Commodore and founder of today’s Sequoia Yacht Club.

Here is a reprint of that article:

“Peninsula Yachtsman’s salute this month is to Dr. August J. Fromm, commodore and founder of the Sequoia Yacht Club at Redwood City.

Living in Redwood City for twenty-five of his thirty-two years of life, the Commodore, according to his father, August Fromm, Sr., has always had a love for the water. No wonder, Fromm, Sr., owned and sailed boats at Redwood City many years ago and with his sloop “Eclipse” took part in many races. “Doc” organized the present club and a fine job he did, too. It was no easy task, but then hard work is this young man’s stock in trade.

A true lover of ships and the sea, his hobby is racing at which he is better than a green hand. His snipe “DOC” is always up among the first in every race held by the club.

His first regatta was a fine success and the more than a thousand spectators who lined the shore to witness the races and other events will agree with this writer.

Boating has gone ahead at Redwood to an unbelievable degree and the Commodore is working hard to induce more people to take up the form of recreation.

Fine work, Commodore, and may we wish you nothing but fair winds and good sailing”

Winston Bumpus, Commodore
