Opening Mass and Investiture of 2020 College Leaders

The JOY of the LORD is my STRENGTH!

On Tuesday, JPC celebrated the launch of our 2020 Liturgical Theme from Nehemiah 8:10 – The Joy of the Lord is my Strength, with our Opening Mass, led by Father Mark and members of our new Youth Ministry Team.

The 2020 College Leaders were commissioned into their new leadership roles, and we look forward to seeing them develop as leaders and grow as people, as the year proceeds.

Congratulations to:

  • College Captains:               Georgia Wallace and Gage King
  • Leaders of Justice:             Wanin Tessema and Amadour Baptiste
  • Leaders of Peace:               Kate Jenkins and Paris Morris
  • Leaders of Courage:          Isabel Henden and Andre Paa

The contribution to the Mass by our students made it a very special occasion – the music was exceptional (as always!) led by Ms Robinson and Mr Lyons, with a new song celebrating The Joy of the Lord is my Strength being performed by the band and vocal group.

Thank you to the many students who prayed, read or processed in our Mass. The spirit with which our staff and students contribute to our faith experiences at JPC is fantastic.

Leader of Learning - Mission and Ministry

JPC to host the launch of the Archdiocesan 2020 CARITAS Project Compassion!

Ash Wednesday - 26th February 2020

Next Wednesday sees the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, and JPC has the absolute honour to have been selected to host the launch of Caritas’ Project Compassion Appeal for the Archdiocese.

Archbishop Christopher Prowse will preside over the liturgy, and representatives from Caritas will speak to the students from the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese about the 2020 Caritas theme, Let’s Go Further, Together! inspiring us to work together for the common good.

The ashes will be distributed to our JPC community in this Liturgy, which will begin at 10:00 AM, and if you would like to be part of this, please RSVP to the school office so we can accommodate you with seating.

Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.

We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each House at JPC will collect donations over lent, or you can donate online via our website at lent.caritas.org.au

Let’s Go Further, Together!

STEM Camp at UOW

During January, Amisha Sehgal, Paige Nieuwendyk and Bridget Shelley were privileged to have spent 4 days exploring the campus and STEM courses offered by the University of Wollongong.

The camp was focused specifically on the different types of engineering, with a focus on material and electrical engineering.

We had a tour around BlueScope Steelworks in Port Kembla and seeing their process for producing steel for companies such as Colourbond, visiting the Sea Cliffe bridge and learning about how Transport NSW works with innovative ideas to produce and improve infrastructure, as well as seeing the other clubs/various courses offered by UOW.

We were able to stay within student accommodation on campus, allowing an insight into what campus life is like. We learnt what different fields are in STEM through talks from people high in their field and we got insider scoops into what they’re working on, as well as students currently enrolled in UOW.

Aside from learning about STEM subjects in UOW, we got to meet like-minded girls from NSW and QLD, allowing us to share our passion of STEM with girls our age. At the end of the journey, we came out with knowledge of leadership and the innovative solutions brought forth by UOW. We would highly recommend this camp to current Year 9/10 girls who are interested in STEM, however deep their passion may be.

Senior Dance

Meet our 2020 senior dancers! Here is what they have to say about the senior Dance course at St John Paul II College. Read their wonderful testimonials below:

Dance in our time gives me the opportunity to expand my own knowledge about dance today as well as learning the origins of dance as a whole. The senior dance class allows me to improve and work on my own skills. -  Isabel Redman - Year 11

I love senior dance because of the environment within the class and the opportunities that it provides. Even with an injury, I am still able to be involved within the class and participate where possible. I would recommend dance to anyone, no matter your ability as it is such a welcoming class where we are all able to improve and learn together. - Emma Bramham - Year 11

I love dance because it gives me a chance to improve my artistic skills and expand my knowledge on the current trends and dance styles in dance. I also love our Monday morning conditioning classes and learning new choreography each week! - Ella Colquhoun - Year 11

I have done dance since I was young and have tried different styles: break dance and Hip- hop. was a way for me to express how I feel in a different way, as talking wasn’t something I was good at. Dance helps me calm down. - Esha Bale - Year 11

Dance in our time is the unit that we are studying this semester, its about expressing yourself and exploring the different aspects of dance. Dance is something that I have always loved to do because I am able to jump out of my comfort zone and I am able to improve my skills, learn knew styles and techniques. So far, this semester has been fun as we have been learning new choreography and what dance in our time really is. - Larni Bush – Year 11

We are currently doing a unit called dance in our time. I love doing dance and being able to do it at school is so fun. Dance in year 11 is a good place to improve my skills and knowledge. We do a variety of different things for example some lessons we do conditioning; some lessons we learn choreography and others we learn about the history of dance. I recommend it. - Caitlin Mahoney - Year 11

I really love doing dance at St John Paul II College, because I am able to dance with new people, and make new friendships. Dance here has been really fun, and I definitely recommend it to all that enjoy being active! :)) - Emilia Hromow - Year 12

I have done dance for a few years at JPC and studying dance throughout year 11&12 is a great opportunity to expand my knowledge in different styles of dance. Studying dance in college gives me a chance to have fun and relieve stress during peak assessment periods.
10/10 would recommend! - Bella Hubbard - Year 12

Year 9 & 10 Dance

Dance for Year 9 & 10 has begun with so much enthusiasm from both Ms Mostyn (as always) and the students. This semester students are studying Contemporary Dance in Term 1 and World Dance in Term 2! Here are the wonderful group of students studying elective dance for semester 1, 2020.

Sport

Congratulations Tom

Tom Williams (Year 11) won the Water Polo U16 National Championships in January playing for Sydney University. The SU Blues team was undefeated across the tournament beating the best teams from across Australia and playing the top WA team for the Gold medal. The final was played in a packed swimming venue at Chandler in Brisbane and streamed across Australia.

He had to train at least four times a week here in Canberra and then go to Sydney nearly every Friday night for squad training and then back again every Sunday for standard team games in the Sydney Metro comp often returning at midnight. To stay in the top team for his next goal, the NSW State championships, Tom will continue to train with the Men’s 1st Grade and with SU in Sydney where approximately 40 boys will be vying for selection for the 12 top spots. This was a hard task of training both in Canberra and Sydney, trials and pressure of highly competitive sport. Well done Tom!
