The Outdoor Classroom

Children at this age (kindergarten) learn best through play and are constantly learning all the time. Learning is not confined to the classroom but can occur at anytime; in the car on the way to school, meal times, anywhere and everywhere! The children in Kindergarten 2 have been taking their learning outside the classroom and are enjoying the freedom to dictate the conditions. They have been learning how to write their names and alphabets through different mediums and making beautiful patterns outside! Mrs Balakrishnan

Gingerbread man. Run, run...as fast as you can!

Pre-Primary have been continuing their learning of fairy tales. This week we have been learning all about The Gingerbread Man. During Mathematics, children have been practising their positional language by placing the gingerbread man in different positions around the fox. The children have been enjoying a range of activities about the main character, including making their own out of shaving cream and spices! They have also been engaged in many activities focusing on letter recognition and letter formations.

During this last week the children will complete their learning journey of fairy tale families. They have thrown some beans in the classroom, ready to learn all about Jack and the Beanstalk….let’s see if a beanstalk will grow?

Light and Sound

In Science, the year 1s have been learning about light and sound.  We made predictions about where we would find light and dark around the school.  Then we went searching and recorded our observations in our science journals.  We also discussed sources of light and noticed that some sources are natural and some are man-made.

To explore sound, we made musical shakers.  We had to choose what material to put in them and tested whether our shakers made a high or low sound, or soft or loud.  Some of the materials included rice, pasta, sprinkles, beans and beads.  We really enjoyed making them!

Weird bugs at CREEC

Last Friday, the Year 2.1 class attended World Expo Day at Canning River Eco Education Centre.

The students completed five activities provided by environmental organisations that are passionate about the future of our planet.

The students used microscopes to investigate insect features and were able to see spiders and other wonderful and weird bugs. They also used microscopes to closely examine the leaves of native and non-native plants which are water wise plants. The next activity was Beaks, Feet and Feathers, where the students explored different types of bird’s beaks and feet. They had to glue the correct beak that matched their bird, and then draw their bird’s body. Finally they glued feathers and an eye.

At Little Litter Legends, the students learned about the impact of litter on our environment and how it can harm our marine creatures. The students saw Sheldon the turtle who had plastic bags inside of him. The last activity we went to was The Race to Recycle Right, where the students had to quickly and accurately sort the rubbish into the correct bin. The students enjoyed the excursion and their favourite activities were looking at the bugs under the microscope and completing the beaks, feet and feathers activity.

Plenty to talk about.

Year 2 students have been learning how to represent division sums by drawing arrays of objects. They drew pictures of arrays on whiteboards making sure each group had a “fair share”.

They were asked questions about their representations to assist students in identifying the relationship between multiplying and dividing groups of numbers.

In ICT the students have been learning about the artist Piet Mondrian who uses only primary colours and horizontal and vertical black lines.  The students used this concept in Paint.NET to create a similar piece of art using only primary colours and then took it to the next level with secondary colours and diagonal lines.  They then inserted these two pictures into MS-Word.

A photo board of the year 3 Camp Night is currently on display on the verandah outside the office for parents and students to enjoy. Thank you to all the parents who braved the elements to sleep over. It was a wonderful experience for all.

Mrs Wilkinson/Mrs Ellis.

Different things.

In Class 3.1 we made bracelets to tell the Christian story:   black is for sin; red is for the blood of Jesus which he shed for us;  white is for being washed clean of sin;  blue is for baptism into  God’s family;  green is for growth as we grow the fruit of the Spirit in our lives;  gold (yellow) is for Heaven, where the streets are paved with gold and where we’re going!

As a lead up to Easter we revisited the Bible story, so that we know were reminded of the true meaning.

We have had lots of fun doing some practice tests for NAPLAN.

Mrs Innes.

We've been busy!

Year 4’s have been busy discovering the best soil for growing plants in Science and playing Numeracy and Measurement games in Mathematics.  During English we’ve been exploring the strategies authors use to reveal setting, character and culture through their writing to improve our reading comprehension and narrative writing.  We’ve also been reading, discussing and writing about Jesus and the Easter story, with a closer look at the virtue of compassion.

River Ranger Cadets

The Year 5/6 River Rangers participated in a junk art incursion facilitated by a group called Junkadelic. They created an art piece titled ‘Kraken reading Bible’. You can find this big squid sitting in the trees at the front of our school. Mr Tracy

Go Regent Swimmers!

Regent College swimmers represented their school extremely well during last week's inter-school carnival; they showed courage and determination in every race and gave 100 percent. Special mention to Radinka and Pearl, the only two year 5 girls available on the day and raced in every event and never once complained or said they had enough! The year 4 girls Alexia and Jorja raced up in the year 5 girls relay to therefore allow Regent to compete in this relay. Fantastic effort from these girls racing against older girls.

Anthony Wild won champion year 5 boy and Kieran Frame came third overall year 5 boy.

The year 5 boys medley and freestyle relay team won both their events.

Thank you to Mr Tracey, Mrs Saxton and Mrs Wild for helping on the day. Thank you to the parents who supported and cheered loud all day.

Faction Carnival. Congratulations to the following students for their achievements at the recent Regent College Faction Carnival (senior).

Nya, Tayla, Anthony, Ken and Grace.

Peaceful Pathways to Conflict Resolution

The Alternatives to Violence Project (APA) WA is a non-religious, not for profit organisation which has run workshops in Perth since 1994. This is an international programme based on over 40 years of experience. We conduct workshops for members of the general community to help participants discover new and creative ways of responding to conflict situations and to build community. Participants find strengths and skills within themselves that will enable them to deal with future conflict or potentially violent situations in a more positive manner.

In the Basic Workshop guided experiences and exercises focus on:

Affirmation, Communication, Co-operation, Community Building and Conflict Resolution

Those who have completed a Basic course are invited to participate in an Advanced level workshop. There is then a third course in which people can train to become facilitators to help with this valuable work in schools, prisons and the community.

For further information: avpwa.org

There is an AVP Basic workshop on 14th-15th May (9.00-5.30 each day).

Venue:  Girl Guides House, Victoria Park
