Electives - Year 9 & 10

7 February 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

The allocation of electives is based on student preferences, teacher/specialist space availability and class sizes. We always have to make some hard decisions when there is a mis-match between student preferences and our school’s capacity to offer classes. An example for this year is Forensic Science, a new offering. This elective proved to be SUPER popular and there was no way that we could meet this demand. Our decision was to only offer this elective to Year 10s, who will not have this option again. Even with this unit running four times this year, some Year 10s will have missed out.

It is important to note that no junior electives are prerequisites for senior study, except for continuing Languages.

Today (Friday), students in Year 9 and 10 would have received a print out of all their subjects for this year. This includes their electives for Semester 1 (Rot 1,2) and Semester 2 (Rot 3,4). If there is no Rotation noted, then the elective runs for the full year (e.g. languages, Hospitality).

If students are keen to change an elective, the process is:

  1. Consult the list for electives being run on Line 2 and Line 8 (just labels)
  2. Write the request for change from:______ to:________ on the print out students received today.
  3. Consider both Semester 1 AND Semester 2.
  4. Parent/Guardian sign. There is no need to justify the request. Changes that can be done will be done.
  5. Students return the print out through their PC roll or to the wall trays in the wellbeing area (left of wellbeing office door/outside Dr Cleary’s office).

Students may not repeat the same elective unit; they may elect to do a second unit in the same area (e.g. Law – Introduction to Civil Law and Law – Introduction to Criminal Law). Design Tech 2 is only available to students who have successfully completed Design Tech 1.

As the majority of electives are full, a request to move into an elective can only be accommodated if another student requests a matching move out. No student will be removed from their current elective unless they make a request.

We ask that all requests are received by 3:35pm Wednesday 12 February. It will be a complex jigsaw, but we intend that all possible changes are processed by Friday of Week 2. Our goal is that all students are settled in their Semester 1 electives by the beginning of Week 3. Students’ whose requests have been actioned will receive a new timetable for Semester 1 advising of electives and rooms.

Please direct any queries through your House mentor or Leaders.

Regards,

Dr Ann Cleary
