Dear families.

Welcome to this latest edition of the Regent Digest.

Every few years, independent schools are required to participate in a registration renewal process. On Monday 5th September, Regent College completed the final phase of this 2016 process, with a visit from two representatives from the Western Australian Department of Education. The representatives discussed documentation, met with staff and inspected classrooms and buildings. Planning and preparation was time consuming, with12 areas of regulations under review.

As Principal, I was very pleased with the preparations and College visit. I would like to sincerely thank all staff for their significant contributions both in advance and during the College visit.

Finally, the weather last Monday was absolutely beautiful. For this, and many other things, we give thanks to God.

The College should receive notification of the outcome of this process by the end of this year.

Enjoy your week.

Derek Nicholls. Principal.

NAPLAN RESULTS -  The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) has concluded for 2016. The individual student reports for Years 3 and 5 have now been distributed to families.

The College is pleased to announce that the overall results for both Years 3 and 5 were very good, with Regent College achieving higher than the National and State average in all areas that were assessed.

KINDERGARTEN 1 As part of our Olympic celebrations as “Team China”, Kindergarten 1  were invited to Old Cathay Chinese Restaurant by Lucas’ (student) parents. All of us thoroughly enjoyed a delicious meal and an experience we're unlikely to forget!. After returning to school the students were very excited to make their own restaurant in class including; a fish tank, lanterns and an ATM machine. Our restaurant is open for business starting this week for the children to play in. Kindergarten 1 will soon be cooking up a storm. Mrs Huxley.

KINDERGARTEN 2 The students in Kindergarten 2 were very excited as they prepared themselves for the Olympics! They had the opportunity to create their mascot using different materials and had a lot of fun at the opening ceremony. They participated in all the sporting events and achieved so well! In the classroom, they have been practising their writing skills and some of them could even copy sporting events all by themselves. The students also have their very own Medal Tally chart, brainstorming what sort of behaviours would warrant them medals. Mrs Balakrishnan.

PRE-PRIMARY What a busy time we have been having in Pre-primary! We have been continuing our journey around the world learning about different countries. We have enjoyed welcoming parents into our classroom to share about their home countries and their culture. In Mathematics we have been continuing to build on our measurement knowledge and have enjoyed making chains as long as our classroom! We have also been using the scales to find heavy and light objects. In Literacy, we have been expanding our letter sound knowledge and have been enjoying learning new digraphs! We are getting so good at writing now as we have been having lots of practice. We are looking forward to expanding our cultural knowledge over the next few weeks! Mrs Stein and Miss Baker.

YEAR 1 In Science, Year 1.1 and 1.2 have been exploring how food materials change when heated or cooled. They have; built towers out of spaghetti and marshmallows, used cooked spaghetti to make a picture, toasted bread; cracked raw, boiled and cooled eggs and melted chocolate using the heat from our hand! We discovered some of these changes are reversible and some are irreversible.

We have also been learning how to mix different colours in Art. We knew that yellow and blue made green, so now we have been adding black and white to make the colour darker or lighter.

This is a writing sample from Jordan in Year 1.1. He wrote this letter for a fellow student independently. It is a wonderful example of the kindness we strive for at Regent College. Thank you, Jordan!

Miss Jongeling and Miss Shaw

CLASS 2.1 The past few weeks the students have been working hard to construct the Eiffel Tower out of newspaper. The students worked in small groups and had to roll a sheet of newspaper into three sizes. Each group needed 12 long tubes, 12 short tubes and 8 medium tubes.

First the students constructed the base. They used tape and staples to attach the arches. Next the students used small tubes to build the middle section. Once the four sides were built, they attached them to the base. Finally, they connected the 8 tubes to form the top of the tower.  The students needed help to hold the newspaper rolls in place while they taped and stapled. Thank you to the parents who came to assist us. Mrs Jenkins.

CLASS 2/3 Father’s Day was extra special for the Year 2/3 class this year, as students participated in a fun workshop in order to build something for dad!. Students used hammers and nails to build the gift then designed their own personalised decorative finishes. Thank you to Bunnings for providing the materials and expertise.

As part of our Bookweek celebrations, the Year 2/3 and 3.1 classes caught the Transperth bus to the Victoria Park Library. A special guest author, Raewyn Caisley, shared from her heart about her love of writing. Students were engaged in her endearing stories of her childhood experiences living in a coastal town in New Zealand. They were captivated by her exciting adventures as an adult living in the Australian outback. It was an inspirational and motivating session which our fabulous parent helpers also thoroughly enjoyed.          Mrs Wilkinson.

CLASS 3.1 On Monday (during Book Week) we caught the bus to the Victoria Park library where we met the author Raewyn Caisley, who encouraged us all to become authors and write stories that come from our hearts.   Summer (student) went up and added  two adjectives to sentence starters and we saw how we could create a story and set the scene for a great story.   Special thanks to our parents who assisted on our outing.

CLASS 4.1 The students in Year 4.1 competed enthusiastically in all of the recent Olympic fitness events and their efforts were rewarded with a gold medal in the senior category. Some of them surprised themselves with amazing feats of throwing, jumping and running.  Now they are all looking forward to the whole school athletics competition in Week 9.

The Year 4’s thoroughly enjoyed their excursion to the Victoria Park library last Friday and dressing up for the Book Week parade.  The Book Council’s theme of ‘Australia, Story Country’ certainly challenged the creativity of some students who certainly rose to the occasion.

In Mathematics the Year 4’s have been working on their understanding of equivalent fractions using Mathletics, games such as Dualoh and bingo, along with their textbooks.  Also in Mathematics, Year 4.1 have been designing a scale model of an Olympic city, which has proven to be quite a challenge. They plan to have the completed model ready for the Exhibition of Learning, so mark your calendars for 22 September, 2016 and come along to see the fruits of both their research and construction skills.

CLASS 5/6 The students have been busy of late, participating in the 40 Hour Famine with a furniture free and no talking focus - students were able to raise $2410. This money can feed 360 families of 6 for 1 month.

Twelve students from our class recently participated in an independent schools' Chess competition with 160 other students. Anthony from Regent College won the entire event, with Caleb placing within the top 4.

The River Ranger Cadets (5/6 students) recently participated in a recent environmental art project with focus on bio-diversity. Their work will feature in the upcoming Exhibition of Learning.

Finally, the students have been learning about circuity in Science. Mr Tracy.
