Behind The Screens Newsletter

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

Kia ora koutou,

Spring is finally here in the Southern Hemisphere!

And with it comes a change in law that will give New Zealanders better information on what to expect when they watch films and shows on streaming platforms. From 2021, streaming platforms will be required to show NZ consumer information.

Until now, streaming platforms like Neon and Netflix haven’t been subject to the same local rules for displaying warnings, as cinemas and DVDs. So when you browse films and shows on these platforms, you might see unfamiliar age ratings (e.g. “7+” instead of “PG”) and limited content warnings – or none at all.

That’s all set to change. The law has been updated and the Films, Videos and Publications Classification (Commercial Video On-Demand) Amendment Act has passed.
This means later next year streaming platforms will need to display New Zealand consumer information before playing any film or show. This includes age ratings and content warnings where appropriate, in a format New Zealanders are familiar with. Providers can display either official NZ age ratings and content warnings (for previously classified or rated content), or age ratings and content warnings that are generated using a self-rating system authorised and audited by the Classification Office. Regulations are currently being worked on by the Department of Internal Affairs.

There's more work to do before the changes take effect but it's good news for NZ viewers!

All the best from all of us and remember to #WatchTogether.

Andrew Geddis infographic

We were lucky enough to spend some time with Otago University Faculty of Law professor, Andrew Geddis. He stopped by to kōrero with our team about a key piece of legislation we use in our work - the NZ Bill of Rights. For a larger infographic (captured by our brilliant in-house illustrator, Tara) click here. And for more of Andrew's work click here.

Involve youth conference 2020 - our waka, new seas

We were privileged to contribute to the fantastic Involve Conference 2020, hosted by our friends at Ara Taiohi (with support from our research partners the Collaborative Trust). If you missed out, you can still purchase a late pass to all talks - lots of our team attended, and David presented. A wealth of wisdom from across Aotearoa's youth sector! Well worth your time. Grab your tix here.

Keep It Real Online

NZ government's Keep It Real Online digital literacy campaign now has dedicated sections for both parents AND youth. If you haven't already, check it out.

Because our work involves a broad knowledge of the vast online landscape, we read a lot of media in the office! Here are just a few of the things we've enjoyed over the past month.
