$2.8 million train station upgrades unveiled in Niagara Falls

October 17, 2025

Today, MP Chris Bittle, Acting Regional Chair Pat Chiocchio, City of Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, Niagara Parks Commission Chair Bob Gale, and other transit representatives gathered in Niagara Falls to unveil the newly renovated interior of the Niagara Falls Train Station.

“The renovation of the Niagara Falls train station ensures it will serve as a hub for public transit in Niagara Region for years to come,” said Chris Bittle, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines. “Investments in public transit connect communities and allow Canadians to easily get where they need to be when they need to be there.”

The renovations, valued at $4.4 million, are designed to transform the Niagara Fall’s historic train station and surroundings into a modern, accessible multi-modal transit hub and are being made possible through a partnership between Niagara Region and the City of Niagara Falls, with funding from the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario. Today’s unveiling marks the completion of the first of three phases, valued at $2.8 million which focuses on enhancing customer experience, improving connectivity, and preparing the region for future growth in ridership.

“Our government is protecting Ontario by investing $70 billion to build public transit across the province, including here in Niagara Falls,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “The newly renovated Niagara Falls Train Station will connect people to good-paying jobs, housing and the region’s world-class attractions, growing our economy in the face of economic uncertainty.”

The upgraded train station will serve as a modern gateway for GO Transit customers, VIA Rail passengers, WEGO riders, Niagara Transit, and potentially private carriers like Newcan Coach. Renovations include:

  • A redesigned interior with modernized washrooms, an updated waiting area and digital transit displays.
  • Dedicated space for GO Transit, VIA Rail and WEGO operations.
  • Improved heritage conservation efforts, including a new roof, energy-efficient systems and enhancements that preserve the station’s Gothic Revival architecture dating back to 1879.
  • Enhanced entry and exit configurations to reduce energy loss and improve comfort during extreme temperatures.
  • Creation of driver amenities, tourism kiosks and potential tenant space for organizations such as Niagara Parks.

“This newly renovated station is an important investment in the infrastructure needed to unlock improved GO Train connectivity to our region. Niagara is a gateway to the GTA, and we are building a modern, integrated transportation network that is serving the evolving needs of our growing population and connecting the rest of Ontario with the many economic and tourism opportunities that Niagara has to offer,” said Pat Chiocchio, Acting Regional Chair, Niagara Region.

Originally built in 1879 and designated as a protected heritage asset in 1994 under the Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act, the Niagara Falls Train Station remains a vital and historic structure in downtown Niagara Falls. Renovations respected and preserved its character-defining elements while modernizing the space to accommodate the future needs of transit users, employees and the growing number of visitors arriving in the region.

“This historic landmark will be transformed into a modern gateway to the connected, vibrant community of Niagara Falls! We see it as a future hub of activity, with the revitalization making it more welcoming and accessible to the more than one million people per year who will use it,” said Jim Diodati, Mayor, City of Niagara Falls.

The Niagara Falls Train Station transformation is being partially funded through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program with $1.76 million from the Government of Canada and $1.46 million from the Government of Ontario.
