Social Notes from Vice Commodore Rick...

In order to help you run a calorie deficit going into the feasting time of Thanksgiving week, we have cancelled this Friday's DID.

Actually, the really boring version is we're having the new galley floor installed.  The version is boring - not the floor. This will mark the last step in the floor/galley reconstruction project. The bar, of course, will remain open. And that's even more exciting.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Week!

And right on the heels of your harvest celebration, get ready for it...

Sign your kids or grandkids up for an afternoon of Big Holiday Fun!  Crafts!   Magic Mike's amazing magic show!  A visit from old St. Nick himself!   Food and Fun!

It's our Children's Holiday Party -  Sunday, December 14th from 1:00PM to 4:00PM

Please sign up at the club or on-line and be sure to include the age and gender of the kids that you are bringing.

Thank You Sequoia Yacht Club

Thank you Sequoia Yacht Club.  That Installation Dinner was truly unforgettable!  The decorations and table settings were amazing – thank you Kathy and your volunteers, the food outstanding in all its varied courses -- thank you Steve and Jeff and the wait staff was energetic, detail oriented and full of smiles – thank you Mike and Teri.   Thank you Winston for your work as MC and to everybody else involved.

Congratulations to the award winners.  Well done.

And to top it all off, I have the privilege of being Commodore of the Sequoia Yacht Club this year!   Our members with their talent, imagination, creativity, experience, courage and fun loving spirit are an inspiration to me and I look forward to this year very much.

The Build A Bike project has exceeded my expectations with upward of 25 bikes purchased for the Redwood City Fire Department toy drive.  Thank you to our volunteers and to Robin Weber for coordinating the pick-up.  There is still time and please remember you do not have to assemble the bikes you buy; we have elves for that.  The first bikes have arrived in our shop and that place is starting to fill up!

This weekend the galley appliances will be removed and we will have the new floor installed by Thanksgiving.

Enjoy a restful Thanksgiving

A Big Thank You for a Big Event

I want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who worked tirelessly to make the Installation Dinner a  great success.  We had well over a hundred people in attendance.

Steve Higgs and Jeff Tachibana, the food was just amazing!  From the appetizers through to the desserts, everything was done to perfection!  Absolute perfection! Thank you, too, for dealing with all of the last minute adds, which is to be expected, but always creates mighty challenges. Well Done!

Mike & Terri Marzano and the Sea Scouts team…What a fabulous job your team did not only with the serving, but also with the setup and cleanup, dishes and teardown.  It was an amazing effort and a huge help to the evening. We could not have done this as flawlessly without you.  I really appreciate our relationship and the support we receive from the Sea Scouts. THANK YOU!

Kathy Harris, you and Jeff did a great job in getting the tables set and the decorations were fabulous. Everything looked perfect for the very elegant evening it turned out to be! Thank you! Thank you for your many tireless hours of effort!

Vice Commodore Rick Gilmore, thank you for your help getting the setup complete.  It was a big help, as I was running out of steam by that time. Thank you!

Commodore Dan Lockwood, thanks again for your help with getting the tables set up in the new “Lockwood configuration”.  It worked out great with maximum seating needed for the event. And we did need every last setting. I also wanted to thank you and the Club for the great jacket. It fits like a glove and means quite a lot to me.  The wine opener is beautiful and I hope to share many good bottles of wine using it with the all of you for many years to come. But as my good friend and Rear Commodore, Tim Petersen reminded me, I’ve often said that if I find myself out on the Bay without a corkscrew, I would drop anchor and call Vessel Assist and now I should not need to ever do that.

Thanks again, dear friends, for all you have done and continue to do to support this great Club.

Very best wishes,

  • Junior Sailing: Fadi Maamari
  • Dinghy Fleet Captain: Fred Gillam
  • Power Fleet Captain: Dave Jackson
  • Sail Fleet Captain: Rick Dalton
  • Beer Can Fleet: Alex Huang
  • Winter Series: Tim Anto
  • Redwood Cup Series: Andrew Rist
  • Single-handed / Double-handed Series: Peter Weigt / Anja Bog

The annual cruise out to Angel Island, led by Tom Keegan, is the next event on the list. We've already got 9 boats signed up to take over Ayala Cove with boats flying the Sequoia burgee. You can sign up on-line on the Sequoia web site.

With respect to racing, both our Winter Series and Redwood Cup Series are underway, with the next Winter Race taking place on Saturday Dec. 13 and Redwood Cup Race on Saturday Dec. 20. Winter racing is a long-standing tradition at Sequoia and it is a really unique experience. Sign up for racing on-line at jibeset.net.

There are some very interesting cruising destinations for this next year, including a South Bay Wreck raft-up. See the complete list on-line. Dave Jackson is rallying the power fleet for cruise-outs and other Sequoia activities. We hope that there is something for everyone.

So be sure to ask our fleet captains about their programs. They are a very enthusiastic bunch and are sure to get you excited about upcoming activities. I'm excited about this next year and I will be looking for you out on the water in 2015.
