Regent College - Your child loving learning! No Images? Click here TERM 3 Dear College families, Welcome to this edition of The Regent Digest. I hope you have opportunity over the next week to spend time with close family or friends. Often, at this time of year, we can become quite stressed and burnt-out. A meal with friends or a special family activity may help to restore the balance. I trust you're enjoying this chilly weather, maybe with a hot chocolate and marshmallows. If you would like to join for prayer on a Tuesday morning, (maybe you would appreciate someone praying for you), head to the quadrangle, just outside administration following the morning bell. A small group of parents and the College Chaplain, Steve Wickham, join for a short time of conversation and prayer. Yours faithfully Derek Nicholls. Principal.
KINDERGARTEN 1 & 2 For days it rained and we were confined to the indoors; then finally, the clouds parted and we had some clear skies. We also had the best puddle you can imagine! The students in Kindergarten thought it would be so much fun to play in the puddle; therefore, following a discussion about the logistics, we found the school gum boots and went out to jump in the enormous puddle. Mrs Huxley said we could call it our ‘swimming pond’ but we decided that it was probably a better idea to just put on our boots and splash in the puddle! We all had so much fun in the sunshine, playing in puddles, searching for worms (in the sandpit) and riding our bikes on the basketball court. Mrs Huxley KINDERGARTEN 3 What a fantastic start we have had to Term 3! The students have enjoyed, exploring our topic ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ As a class we agreed that we needed to create an aeroplane to help us travel to multiple different countries around the world. The students enjoyed creating, designing and building an aeroplane (pictured). We've loved using our smartboard to locate and research the different countries of origin of the students within our classroom. In Numeracy, we have continued exploring lots of different numbers and counting out their quantities. We have also been reading and acting out lots of stories using positional language. Our favourites have been ‘Rosie’s Walk’ and ‘Were Going on a Bear Hunt’. In Literacy, we have been participating in lots of activities to enhance our oral language skills. We have been retelling stories as well as acting them out! I wonder where our plane will take us to next? Mrs Stein PRE-PRIMARY 1+2 I wonder... After lunch one day, somebody asked 'I wonder if the Pre-Primaries can fit around the playground?' Well, off we went! We tried measuring the playground with Pre-Primaries...but we didn't have enough, we needed more people! We sent for help, and out came Year 1 and Year 1.2 to help us! Finally, we stretched around the whole junior playground holding hands. We asked one of the Year 1 students to count for us and we discovered that it took 82 Regent College students to measure the perimeter (what a great new word) of the playground! Miss Shaw and Miss Baker CLASS 1.1 In Year 1.1 we have enjoyed a great start to Term 3! We had a fantastic time designing and creating our class project, a Pizza Shop, and have just begun playing in it. In Mathematics, we have been exploring measurement, and had the opportunity to measure length and capacity in a variety of ways. In Literacy, we have begun learning how to write procedures, and in fitting with our theme of "Food". We have enjoyed cooking nachos and making sherbet and adding these recipes to our Recipe Books. In Science, we are investigating how things can be changed, comparing the properties of materials before and after they are changed. We loved getting our hands dirty in cold spaghetti and are looking forward to what comes next! Miss Masters CLASS 1/2 Year 1/2 students have been investigating shiny things. Some of our questions have been, “I wonder how diamonds are made?”, “I wonder why rocks are colourful?” And, “I wonder if you can make playdough shiny?” Miss Jongeling gave us a recipe for playdough and we wrote down materials we could use to make it shiny. We made our playdough and experimented with different materials to make it shiny. In Mathematics, we have been learning about measurement. We each received a pet string and measured who had the longest and shortest pet string. Everyone also built a vehicle out of construction materials and had a race. We measured the distance using counters and measuring tapes. Using our iPads, we then recorded the data and generated a bar graph. Miss Jongeling CLASS 2.1 This term, Year 2.1 are learning about endangered animals. The students are writing an informative report on their chosen endangered animal, using books and the Internet to locate information. They are learning inquiry skills and knowledge of text structure as they complete their reports. The students are enjoying reading numerous books and sharing what they have learnt. In Guided Reading, the students read an information text on pandas. In Art, they designed and created a Giant Panda using black and white paper; including 3D models. In Mathematics, the students were given a variety of manipulative materials, including endangered animal soft toys, to represent multiplication as repeated addition, groups and arrays. In small groups, they have constructed cup towers and created their own ‘Thinkboard’, to demonstrate their understanding of multiplication. The students made a matching number line and skip counted, to find out the total number of cups on their tray towers. Mrs Jenkins CLASS 3.1 The Regent Café is open for business in the Year Three classroom. The children have been taking turns being customer, barista, cashier, chef and waiter. They have purchased items using different combinations of coins and are becoming competent at giving change. The students have been investigating 3D shapes and have extended their mathematical vocabulary with words such as cuboid and apex. They have found the difference between prisms and pyramids and have drawn block constructions from different viewpoints. They have looked for 3D shapes in the environment, have made shapes from nets and will soon be studying cross-sections. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Ellis CLASS 4.1 Thank you so much to the school community for assisting with our Care Square Drive. In total we collected 702 squares and we had great fun doing various activities with the squares. This picture shows us working out how to show the words "Regent Care Squares" and it took a lot of teamwork to complete this activity! We also spent time deciding how to sort the squares into different categories. In Science we have been learning about properties of materials. We did an activity where we had to sort out examples of materials and their property descriptions and explanations. This really tested our skills and we learnt some new vocabulary. Do you know what malleable means? We do!!! Knitting squares has been great fun and now some of our class members are using these skills to create new designs. Mikaela made a sleeping mask and Aliza finger-knitted a necklace and pendant. Vogue here we come! Mrs Innes CLASS 5/6 As part of our measurement topic in Mathematics, students measured their arm spans and made conversions from cm to mm to m. In our science lesson students continued to use measuring skills to create a scale model of the distances of the planets from the sun. Last week we had some speakers come from Alpha Motivational to present a half day workshop with the students. The students set SMART goals, wrote thank you notes to people that have impacted their lives and learnt about effective communication, in a hands on environment. It was a very engaging workshop with the students setting goals they would like to achieve in the near future. Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson PHYSICAL EDUCATION Over the last few weeks the Year 1-6 classes have commenced training for upcoming athletics carnival events. Events include baton relay races, tunnel ball, rotational passball, leaderball, turbo javeline throw and long jump. The students have also been running longer distances in preparation for the Regent College House Cross Country event, tomorrow - Friday 11th August. Repeated information HERE. It has been great to see a steady improvement in the students skills and physical fitness. Students from the Year 3 class displaying great long jump technique. Mrs French
LANGUAGES - Italian Year 1&2's have been learning about pets in Italian, this term. To see which was the most popular pet they would like to own, the students had to create a 'grafico' to their 'animale preferito'. Whilst we had some interesting pets like snakes and turtles, the ever loving dog was the most 'preferito'. Signora Kerrigan MUSIC Year 1.1 students have been exploring ways of moving to classical music using mirroring techniques. Students take turns at being the leader as the other follows every movement as closely as they can. Year 1.2 students have been looking at music from different times and places. Opposite they are performing a hip hop routine called ‘The Sid Shuffle'. Year 3 students created a class sculpture to music. They were specifically exploring creative movement direction cues ‘Around’ and ‘Through’. Year 5 students spent a couple of lessons working in small groups to compose an arrangement of sound effects to accompany a poem, which they then performed for the class. They really enjoy performing their own compositions for each other. Mrs Marshall DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES Students in Year 1 and 2 have been learning about online safety from Hector's World; primarily about the difference between personal versus private information. HERE is a link to a parent information site, from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. Dear families (Kindergarten to Year 6) During September, schools around Australia show their true colours on Footy Colours Day to make sure children with cancer achieve the same educational milestones as their peers. Football unites people, whether it is AFL, NRL, A League, Rugby Union or any other code. On Friday the 15th September, Regent College will unite, stand shoulder- to shoulder with fellow Australians and support children living with cancer. We have set aside this day for our students to wear their favourite footy team colours or uniforms instead of their usual College uniform. Students are asked to bring in a gold coin/s donation which will be forwarded to the Fight Cancer Foundation. If everyone gets involved, our donation should make a difference. FOOTY COLOURS DAY Friday 15th September at Regent College. Thank you to Miss Pushpini Jayathissa for organising the Saturday Chess competition. Congratulations to the Regent College students who participate and were very competitive, including the students pictured. Approximately 16 Regent College students will participate in an upcoming inter school Chess competition at St Mark's College, a competition that Regent won in 2016. CHESS Recently, the College accommodated approximately 70 students from local schools (including Regent College), for a weekend Chess competition. This was the inaugral competition for Miss Pushpini Jayathissa, who operates a before/after school chess club here at Regent College.

As parents should now be aware, last week we announced the names' of our new College House system - for carnivals and various groupings. If you would like to learn more, click HERE. FROM THE REGENT COLLEGE BOARD Recently in a parent survey we noticed that some parents were unclear about the role of the College Board. Like most private schools Regent is an Incorporated Association (Associations Incorporation Act 2015). The Act requires the College to have a constitution to govern how it operates and a Board to oversee those operations. The College Principal, Mr Nicholls, is responsible for the day to day running of the school, including hiring and allocating duties to staff as he determines to be appropriate, managing curriculum in such a way as to meet educational standards and for overseeing student safety and wellbeing. Mr Nicholls reports to the College Board. The Board is responsible for providing strategic guidance for the College and effectively overseeing and reviewing the College’s management. Board members are expected to bring and use not only their professional expertise and experience but also their strong support of the College vision, mission and values, for the benefit of the College. More specifically the Board is responsible for:
