Last Sunday, the 4th Sunday of Easter, is commonly referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday”. It is also known as “Vocation Sunday”, a day when our Church prays especially for new faith leaders who work in our Christian communities. One of the images in Sunday’s reading focuses on the relationship between sheep and their shepherd. The sheep and their shepherd A reflection on last Sunday’s Gospel, John 10:1-10. (adapted from Living Space - Sacred Space, 4th Sunday of Easter) The sheep hear, recognise and follow their shepherd’s voice. In a fold where there are many sheep and their shepherds, the true shepherd knows which ones belong to him. He calls them out one by one. They, recognising his voice, follow him. They will not follow others, even if called by them. When the shepherd has brought out his sheep to pasture, he goes ahead. And they follow. They look to their shepherd for direction and guidance to stay safe and find good pastures. The shepherd of the biblical Middle East had a close relationship with a small flock. He would bring them out to pasture each day and spend all his time with them. In the evening he would bring them back to the enclosure where they would be safe from preying animals. He knew each one individually and would notice immediately if even one was missing Our teachers and parents in this time - “What does God want us to be? Whilst the image of God as the shepherd of His people has a long tradition in our faith, I contemplated this reading in a different way, thinking of our teachers and parents, (and especially our MOTHERS with Mother’s Day this weekend), who are currently working so very hard to ‘shepherd’ the students and children in their learning and care. It has been inspirational to see the creative ideas which teachers are sharing, that ensure our students experience rich, deep learning that engages them, and develops their ability to work and think critically in independent ways. One of the beautiful experiences to come from remote learning and isolating in the home is the precious time family members are spending together. It has been a joy to hear of parents and children reconnecting, doing simple things away from online distractions that draw us away from those whom we love. Share your gifts At this time, we should also especially look beyond our families, and ask ourselves, “What does God want me to be? What are my particular gifts? How can I offer these gifts in service to my own Christian community, and beyond, especially to those who need support at this time?” As our isolation continues, can you extend your support to someone in your community who needs help, an elderly neighbour with the shopping, a trip to the post office, or even just a check-in over the fence to see if they are OK? You, too, can be a ‘faith leader’ in a small way. Jennifer Tually Leader of Mission and Ministry and Ferré House In and Around JPCMother’s Day Prayer – Zooming with our JPC Mums! This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and our PC groups invited our mums to join in our ZOOM meetings for a special Mother’s Day prayer, set up by Caitlyn D’Cruze, one of our Youth Ministers, (in lieu of our annual JPC Community Mass in honour of all our JPC mums that we would have held on Thursday this week). The prayer is available on Moodle in the Liturgy page if your Mum was not able to attend, and you would like to pray with her on Mother’s Day! (Don’t forget – breakfast in bed is just LOVELY - if mum can stand the crumbs……) Jennifer Tually Leader of Mission and Ministry and Ferré House Project Compassion Donations – 1 week to go!Our Inter-House competition for Project Compassion fund raising during Lent has continued through our remote learning period, but has been impacted the tyranny of distance! We currently have a total of $3793.30, with more money coming in each day. Thank you to all those who have contributed, especially in this uncertain time, and congratulations to Veritas – SO FAR!! We have decided to keep this open for 1 more week. Next Friday (May 15, 2020) will be your last chance to donate via JPC Qkr! and boost your House total! Jennifer Tually Leader of Learning and Wellbeing (Mission and Ministry, Ferré House) Band ZoomsWe all know that every teacher has a unique way of getting the students engaged with lessons, but this technique I thought was brilliant. Aron decided this week to make the kids laugh as they entered their band Zooms by going through his costume box. It’s so important in times like this, especially when we are not face-to-face teaching, to try and engage our students as best we can, and by these images, you can tell that Aron did just that. What a brilliant way to start off the lesson by making me and all the students laugh. It woke us all up a bit, broke the ice and the students had really enjoyable Zoom lessons with Aron. Thank you, Aron for making me and the students laugh and remind us to lighten up and not take anything too seriously all the time. It’s great having such a positive music colleague who I know will make me smile when I’m down, to share the amazing times and the challenging times, and always make me laugh. On behalf of all the music students at JPC, thank you Aron! Sharon Robinson and all the music students Visual ArtsYear 9 & 10This week, Year 9 and 10 Visual Art students have been getting creative in the kitchen with a ‘food art’ challenge. Students were tasked to used ingredients in their pantry to create an artwork from an inspiration image or their imagination. Students could choose to create sculptures, sauce paintings, pancake art or any other work using edible materials. Students loved getting involved in the kitchen and creating these beautiful pieces for their younger siblings or with their families as a fun activity. They look too good to eat!!Yolandi Swart IMS, Science and Visual Art Teacher Year 8In these tricky times, our Year 8 Visual Art classes have been creatively finding ways to share their learning. Here are some examples of the Week 11 zoom challenge: to create a scavenger hunt colour-wheel, using only items available at home. Miss Owen has loved seeing everyone’s colour theory assemblages! A special mention goes to Isabel Pratt and Phoebe Bruhn for these beautiful creations: Miss Elizabeth Owen Visual Arts, Media and Photography Teacher 9/10 Design and Technology – Practical projects (from home) Online learning has been a seen a complete overhaul for the Technologies, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our team of wonderful teachers for their innovation, and willingness to find ways of making their subjects accessible from home. I have seen thread, wheels and robotics kits flying out of the building in record speed, and we are loving seeing what you come up with. In Design and Technology for weeks 11 and 12, students were tasked with the first of 3 parts of their assessment task. They were to create a “standing/seating device” out of cardboard boxes. Tasked with this knowledge, and some very basic guidelines (like, don’t use a whole roll of tape), off they went to create some incredible, strong and at times colourful designs. We are loving seeing families involved and knowing that our subject got you all off your screens! For those of you not in Design and Tech courses – feel free to come up with your own standing or seating device, a great challenge for your whole family perhaps. As part of the evolution and growth, we are looking for interested parents who would like to bring their expertise, commitment and passion to provide continued success to St John Paul II College. The College Council was established in 2013 and has made a significant contribution over this time. The Council is seeking to fill a number of vacant parent positions and ask all parents to consider how they may contribute to the College and nominate themselves to join the Council. The College Council is your way of having a say in how the college operates and providing the College with ideas and feedback across all areas of operation. The Council is actively involved in guiding the development of the catholic identity and character, approving governance structures and finances, ensuring the College is meeting its obligations to the parent community and working to build networks and relationships to support the College in the achievement of strategic goals. Mrs Stephanie O’Meara and the Leadership Team in conjunction with the Catholic Education Office are responsible for the day to day operation of the College with the Council providing a governance structure, similar to that of a Board for a corporation. Working with Mrs O’Meara who is the public representative of the school, the council has responsibility for providing feedback and making decisions on behalf of the school community in relation to areas such as:
