AUSTRALIAN EVENTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Megan Jones at the Australian Eventing Championships, Wandin Park.

Megan Jones at the Australian Eventing Championships, Wandin Park.

The Australian Eventing Championships took place over the weekend of March 23 - 24. The event was held at the beautiful Wandin Park, owned by the Anker Family, which overlooks the Warramate Hills.

John and Angela Anker with a dedicated band of family, workers and volunteers have been holding Horse Trials here since 1981.

2019 was one of the the biggest. Over 740 horses tackled the event made up of three phases - Dressage, Cross Country and Showjumping. Classes ranged from beginners jumping 65cm up to  4* jumping 125cm.

Former Olympians Amanda Ross and silver medalist Megan Jones were among the competitors vying for the title of Australian Champion.

Amanda Ross riding Koko Popping Candy (Barastoc Eventing Horse of the Year - 2018 EV Awards) was successful in the 4* and Delwyn Ogilvy riding Precious Dreams took out the 3* title.  Megan Jones finished a creditable 3rd in the 3* at her first competition back after the safe arrival of baby Finn in January.

The spectacular view of the cross country course from the top of the hill attracted a large crowd with the added attraction of food vans and a large Trade Village. The final event on the Sunday was the much anticipated Shetland Grand National won this year by ‘Pocket’ ridden by Chloe Hartshorn.

2020 will be the 40th running of this iconic event and once again carries the title of The Australian Eventing Championships.

For more information and photos go to the Wandin Park Facebook or webpage.

EWAN KELLETT

Many thanks go to this long-time member of the Victorian Eventing Committee who has resigned.

We think he has been with us for at least 18 years and we really appreciate Ewan’s continued contribution to our Sport. His knowledge on all aspects of the sport and especially Course design has been invaluable. As you all know he is a very busy Cross Country Course Designer and although he has left our Committee he is still at the end of the phone every time we call. Thank you Ewan and please don’t change your number :)

SQUADS

We have had a great start to the year with Development, Equissage Young Rider and Prydes Senior Squads being held in January, February and March.

We have just held a successful Cross Country Squad on Sunday March 17th at Greenvale Equestrian Centre, (Avenel). After the sad cancellation of Tonimbuk Horse Trials due to the bushfires and our subsequent Cross Country Days at the venue, we were grateful to the Clubs at Greenvale for allowing us to train there. Sixty four riders took the opportunity to polish up their skill before The Australian Eventing Championships.

TONIMBUK

By now most will be aware that Tonimbuk had to make the gut wrenching call to cancel this year's event due to the damage to the XC course in the recent Bunyip State Forest fires.

Many of the Tonimbuk committee members were directly impacted, and our thoughts are with those who suffered loss.

Though there is  a huge task in front of them, the organising committee, the community and the owners of the land (the Hanson's), plan to bring the event back bigger and better next year.

We ask all members to show their support wherever they can as 'Tonimbuk' face the hard work ahead.
