NATE

NOTE: This email newsletter is brought to you by NATE: The Communications Infrastructure Contractors Association and written by our very own Director of Safety & Education, Brian Bicknese.

Behind the Name "The Anchor Point: A NATE Safety Bulletin"

An anchor point can be understood in a couple of different ways. The most obvious is a fall protection anchor point, a key component of any fall protection system. The other meaning is more figurative: it represents the things that keep you grounded.

Each month, The Anchor Point will focus on three key safety areas: Products, Standards, and a Spotlight Story. Content provided for the Anchor Point is derived from NATE's Safety & Education Committee.

Safety Product: Dash Cameras & Telematics

Dash cameras and telematics systems are valuable tools that help organizations improve driver safety, reduce vehicle-related incidents, and make informed, data-driven decisions. By capturing real-time driving events and vehicle performance, these technologies provide objective insights into behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, harsh braking, and seat belt use. They also support coaching opportunities, expedite incident investigations, protect drivers from false claims, and improve fleet efficiency through GPS tracking, maintenance alerts, and route optimization. When implemented with clear policies and a focus on continuous improvement, dash cameras and telematics foster a proactive safety culture that protects employees, company assets, and the public.

Based on fleet adoption, technology, industry reputation, and feature set, these are currently the strongest options in the U.S.

  1. Samsara AI Dash Cam - Large fleets & enterprise
  2. Motive AI Dashcam - Small & mid-size fleets
  3. Lytx DriveCam - Safety coaching programs
  4. Netradyne Driver - AI recognition & positive coaching
  5. Verizon Connect Video - Existing Verizon customers
  6. Geotab + Surfsight - Open telematics ecosystem
  7. SmartWitness - Construction & utility fleets
  8. BlackVue Fleet - Owner-operators & small fleets

Safety Regulation: FMCSA

It's assumed that climbing a structure is the most dangerous thing we do in our industry, when in fact, driving down the road is much more hazardous! The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation responsible for reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving commercial motor vehicles on the nation's roadways. FMCSA develops and enforces safety regulations governing commercial drivers, trucking companies, and motor carriers engaged in interstate commerce. Through initiatives such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), Commercial Driver's License (CDL) standards, electronic logging device (ELD) requirements, vehicle inspection and maintenance regulations, and driver qualification requirements, the agency establishes a consistent framework that promotes safe transportation practices across the country.

For the communications infrastructure industry, FMCSA plays a critical role in protecting both workers and the traveling public. NATE member companies rely on commercial vehicles to transport personnel, climbing equipment, construction materials, utility trailers, and specialized machinery to job sites every day. Compliance with FMCSA regulations helps ensure that drivers are properly trained and qualified, vehicles are inspected and maintained, cargo is securely transported, and operators are prepared to safely navigate varying road and weather conditions. By emphasizing driver fitness, hours-of-service compliance, vehicle safety, and proactive maintenance, FMCSA helps reduce roadway incidents, protects company assets, and supports a stronger culture of safety that extends from the highway to the job site.

Safety Spotlight:  NATE's Safety Poster: Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment system - anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.

You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

NATE's safety posters are targeted specifically on the industry's "hot topics," and distracted driving is one of the biggest risk exposures we have.
