SCENE STUDY: Experiments in Truth & Emotion ON SCREEN.
Scene Study I 8 Week Program I Wednesday I 6:30pm - 9:30pm I Commencing February 18th, 2015
This program has been designed to bring students into the reality of the narrative of which they perform, and to bring TRUTH to the scene with ease - in the most organic way. Our super objective is to arm students with techniques to multi-layered performances, and to take risks - all of which makes for an interesting and unpredictable performance, keeping viewers captivated from start to finish.
Many times when reading scripts we are faced with BIG PRINT that requires EMOTION in a scene. "He/She cries uncontrollably..." "She/He rages with anger..." Obviously EMOTION is a common part of our living experience and particularly during conflict, which is at the heart of all drama. The 'Question' then, is "How do we access that EMOTION and yet still serve the TRUTH of the scene?" So often we are tempted to 'demonstrate' or 'push' to find the EMOTION and in the process compromise the TRUTH. Join actor Damian Walshe-Howling to explore these questions through group discussion script analysis and experimentation in front of the camera.
Each of us has our own process. We will explore ways to enhance that process and apply it to on screen performance. Quite often the shift between where we are in ourselves, at any particular moment, and the requirements of the scene is much smaller that we first imagine. Finding the courage to expose our vulnerability, our lack of knowing, our humanity (in the scene) can be a challenge but it can often help us discover something far more alive in the work. What is it to be still, to listen, to access TRUTH through instinct and presence? Throughout this intensive 8 week block, you will develop invaluable preparation tools for both Screen-tests and overall Scene Development.
