Dutch Design Event at Primus Hotel

Primus Hotel, 25 February 2016

The Dutch Design reception was a well visited event!
Guests were welcomed to view various Dutch design brands with product displays on the roof top of the Primus Hotel in downtown Sydney. Design and fashion brands such as Scotch & Soda, POM Amsterdam Australia, 4everwitheveryone, Rituals Cosmetics, KE-ZU, Envoy Furniture, Claesen's Australia, Space Furniture, Spence & Lyda, House of Orange, PROOFF and Lekker Bikes were all present and exchanged ideas during the highly engaging evening.
We would like to thank everyone for the great turnout, and a big thank you to the Dutch brands and the newly renovated Primus Hotel Sydney for hosting such a fabulous event in a beautiful location.

Brisbane River 2036 Flood Hypothetical

Consul-General Willem Cosijn delivered an opening address at the Brisbane River 2036 Flood Hypothetical at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) last week.

His take was that the Australian-Dutch water collaboration has contributed greatly to flood mitigation in Queensland over the past five years, but more needs to be done to limit the impact of a potential major flood in 2036. The Consul-General underlined the importance of joint investment to further stimulate innovation and knowledge sharing in the future.

The Hague: "Judicial Capital of the World"

Consul-General Willem Cosijn gave a speech at the 10th anniversary of Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship.
The Consulate-General of the Netherlands in Sydney deeply recognises the importance that this internship represents: the Dutch – Australian cooperation on academic education, and in this case, in the field of private international law.

Willem Cosijn elaborated on the position of The Hague, as judicial capital of the world, holding many prominent international institutions, like The Permanent Court of Arbitration, the oldest global institution. But one can also find the highest judicial organ of the UN there: the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) amongst many other international Tribunals.

The Netherlands counts 17.000.000 people!

On 21 March 2016 the population of the Netherlands surpassed the number of 17 million. That is an enormous number for the small country which we are. Because Australia, which is a whole continent, has only six million more people!

Unfortunately it cannot be said who exactly the lucky number 17.000.000 was - Some speculate it is possibly an immigrant rather than a baby.

Population growth is strongest in the Randstad, which is the central and western part of the country. The capital city Amsterdam has around 820,000 inhabitants but there are even more bicycles.

Applying for a Dutch passport

As was mentioned in previous editions, the Consulate-General in Sydney is the only office in Australia where you can apply for a Dutch passport. Unfortunately we are so busy that at the moment you have to wait four weeks for an appointment.

So please book on time. This is very important for those who also have Australian citizenship. Because in that case it is very important to renew your passport within ten years after your previous passport was issued.
