150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF REV GOTTHARD FRITZSCHE
When Pastor Gotthard Daniel Fritzsche died on 26 October 1863, he left a flourishing, growing ELSA Synod under the leadership of former Dresden and Leipzig missionaries and his own three graduates Hensel, Oster and Strempel. The second founding father of the Lutheran Church in Australia was – apart from Pastor Kavel in London – the only confessional Lutheran pastor in Prussia to evade capture and imprisonment during the years of persecution. The congregation he accompanied on the Skjöld in 1841 formed the first church in the Barossa at Bethany, SA, and the second Adelaide Hills congregation at Lobethal, where he remained as pastor until his death. He witnessed the dramatic expansion of local Lutheranism as two decades of German migration merged with the maturing of pioneer families to extend the limits of rural settlement: his ‘Lobethal College’ strove to fulfill the needs of the new congregations by training the teachers and pastors who led the church to the end of the 19th century. Those efforts served as a model of thorough academic preparation and sound theology which his Synod struggled to emulate over the following decades, and only fully achieved in the 20th century. In his last months, he saw his ELSA colleagues combine with the Langmeil-Light Pass Synod (under Kavel’s successors Auricht and Rechner) to take the first steps towards the ‘confessional union’ to establish Lutheran mission to the Aboriginal peoples of Central Australia.
