Thank you to Christian Schools Australia (CSA) who have made this event possible and the College P&F for assisting to coordinate the event. BUILDING A FUTURE FOR REGENT COLLEGE. Commencement is very close and I look forward to providing families with a timeline soon. CHRISTMAS NATIVITY ASSEMBLY. Families are invited to attend a Christmas Nativity Assembly (Pre-primary to Year 6 students attending) on Wednesday 29th November, upstairs in the hall following the morning bell. Morning tea will follow for available parents. Class 3.1 will be presenting this final assembly for the year. Blessings, Derek Nicholls On behalf of Regent College and Riverview Children's Foundation, thank you to all those families that filled and returned pencil cases the for 'Pack A Pencil Case' initiative. Over 70 pencil cases have been returned, so far. For those that haven't it's not too late, you have until tomorrow morning, Monday 20th November to return it to College Administration full of goodies. Thank you for joining with us in supporting the children of Cambodia. Regent College, and Riverview Children's Foundation Kindergarten 1&2 As a continuation of last term’s travel theme, the Kindergarten children have been recording where their families originated from. Each child was asked to draw pictures of their parents and themselves. Once our world map was completed and all the pictures drawn, the parents were invited into our class to help glue the people where they were born. The map also has some reference numbers, and if you look carefully around the room you will be able to see our drawings of famous landmarks. Come in and tell us where you were born, and let us see if we can mark it on our map. Mrs Huxley KINDERGARTEN 3 Last term the Kindergarten classes took a walk down to the river. We walked all the way to the tunnel that goes under the bridge and we wondered what was on the other side? We looked through the tunnel and we observed that there was another path and a park. We were very excited and Mrs Huxley promised we could go back and enjoy a picnic there in Term Four. This term we had to watch and wait until the weather was perfect for an adventure. Eventually, there was a sunny, not too hot day and on a Tuesday morning the Kindergarten 1 and 3 classes walked all the way down to the river for our morning tea picnic. First, we walked down to the bridge and we were very excited to see four dolphins playing in the river. Next, we walked through the tunnel under the bridge and we stopped to have our morning tea picnic under the shade of the big trees. We looked through the trees to the river and we could see water birds and boats and even saw some people waterskiing. We were looking and listening and smelling and touching and talking the whole time. It was a great learning experience! After our morning tea, we walked all the way to River Park and had a good play. On the way back to school our Kindergarten 3 class stopped to celebrate Ava’s birthday and enjoyed a snack of gingerbread cookies that Ava and her mum had baked for us. Finally, we headed back to school and it was a hot and exhausting walk! Most of us had a good nap at rest time that afternoon. Mrs Funk PRE-PRIMARY In Pre-Primary Mathematics we have been learning about positional language. We had so many fun activities to support our learning. We watched a cool video with a ‘where is the monkey?’ song and then made our own monkey finger puppet to place around the room in different positions! We also read Rosie’s Walk and then followed our partner’s instructions of where to place the story items on the felt board. Some of us listened and followed the positional language instructions really well. Miss Shaw and Early Learning Centre (ELC) Parents Friday 1st December at 2:00pm Wednesday 6th December: Friday 8th December YEAR 1 In Year 1, we have continued our learning about weather. We learnt about clouds and rain, and where our water supply comes from. The students enjoyed investigating how they could create a filter to clean some dirty water! In Design Technologies, we investigated how objects can be moved. We had to design something that could transport a teddy from the park to his house. We had so many fantastic ideas; cars, slides, zip-lines and more! In Health, we have been learning about how we all have different areas of strength, and ways that we can encourage others. We wrote letters of encouragement to our ‘secret friends’, and students thoroughly enjoyed reading all the nice things written in their letters. Miss Masters
Designers - Recently, these Year 1 students enjoyed sharing some of their playground design ideas with Mr Nicholls. They each provided an argument as to why they thought their design idea was the best. In reality, they were all equally terrific! YEAR 1/2 Over the past few weeks, Year 1/2 have been busy learning about local communities. We used Google Maps to identify what places are needed in local communities. After recording all the places we could see and think of, we formed pairs and chose a place to design and build. We drew each building in a map and a view and even included a coloured key. We brainstormed that the best materials to make our building were pop-sticks and Lego. Once our city was finished, we wrote about the importance and use of each place. There are a lot more important things in our local communities than we first thought! The Year 1 students have been learning about the colour wheel and how to mix colours. The Year 2 student have been researching historical places in Victoria Park and why they are significant. During our last assembly, we performed There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Mozzie by P. Crumble. This was a great opportunity to demonstrate our vocal projection and expression that we have been practising. Miss Jongeling WE'VE GOT Beetles! It's true; we've got beetles, and plenty of them! It just so happens (thankfully) that they are not the flying kind. Currently in Year 2 Science we are growing mealworms and carefully observing and mapping their life cycle. Each week we are making observations and recording what we notice. We used iScopes to help us with our investigations. It's loads of wriggly fun! Mrs Jenkins Year 2 cont... In History, we are learning how the way we communicate has changed. In Drama, we rehearsed and presented short plays in front of the class. Communicating by: smoke signals, sending a letter by horse and rider, a telephone call through an operator and over the internet. We successfully made old-fashioned telephones, and in Guided reading, we read Alexander Graham Bell’s biography. Mrs Jenkins YEAR 3 Earlier this term Year 3.1 embarked on a voyage of discovery to explore the world of maps by walking the streets surrounding the College with a street map to follow. Along the way, the students were asked to locate various landmarks on their maps and to think about which way they needed to turn to follow the directions they were given before leaving the classroom. In the classroom the Year 3s began the exciting journey of designing a Sphero chariot to race in the hall. It needed to withstand some impact from fellow chariots and had to be made from recycled materials (except for tape and glue). Everyone produced amazing designs with very colourful and imaginative finishing touches. The students were also assessed on their coding ability in ICT through the program each group made to negotiate a track. Each student was asked to reflect on their design, construction and program to encourage progress on their next project. Mrs Johnston YEAR 4 In Mathematics, we have been learning about money transactions, counting change and looking at what is shown on our Australian notes and coins. We were conducting Chance experiments and Rachel (top pictured) is using her prediction skills to see if she can predict the colour of the counter in the bag. She looks very confident! Also, we've were learning about cultural diversity and completed projects on different countries. We learnt about foods, clothing, tourist attractions, traditional foods and famous people in many different countries of the world. Sophie is using the iPad to see the exchange rate of the Australian dollar compared with the Singaporean dollar. Now we know where to go on holiday so our Aussie dollar goes further! These are some of our amazing projects on different countries. We learnt so much from the projects! Mrs Innes YEAR 5/6 This term for Art, the year five and sixes caught the bus into the city and looked at different sculptures around Perth. They found some very interesting sculptures and sketched three of them. In River Rangers we had a visitor from the Water Corporation come and visit to talk about aquifers and the risks of groundwater contamination due to human behaviours. Each student built an aquifer using edible ingredients to represent the various elements. We also discussed how we could protect our groundwater from pollutants. Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES During Term 4, the Year 3's have been learning about Mathematics, Science, Design Technology and Coding; all using Spheros. Sphero is a spherical robot designed to fuse digital apps, physical toys and entertainment experiences to inspire the young learners in a new and relevant way. Our students learned about speed, distance and time; they learned about mathematical angles and directional headings. They were able to plan and then build a chariot from recyclable material, to be pulled by the Sphero through the maze. Each group were able to programme their Sphero to travel through the maze and learn about the effects of resistance and drag, on their Sphero. Through the process of reflection, the students were able to plan the changes they may make next time. Mrs Saxton MUSIC Our Kindergarten students have begun enjoying the Christmas season, learning to sing and play along to some traditional and contemporary Christmas carols. Pictured right are Kindergarten 3 students singing and playing Jingle bells with their hand in the air for a fist pump of the final word ‘Hey!’ The Year 1.1 and Year 1.2 students have been using the skills they have developed over this year to re-create the music of some of the songs they learned from a CD. They were very excited and proud to be making the music ‘Live’, without the use of a backing track. Year 2.1 students have been learning some traditional colonial dances including the Brown Jug Polka and some old-fashioned, classic hand clapping games including Miss Mary Mack and Down Down Baby to link in with their Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum. They have loads of fun, and enjoy the physical activity. The hand clapping games and dances are fantastic for developing bilateral co-ordination, sequencing, rhythm and beat and is an opportunity for socialization. Mrs Marshall Jumps and Throws Carnival On Tuesday 7 November, select Year 3-6 students went to the Interschool Jumps and Throws event held at Gerry Archer Reserve. The students competed against other schools in the WASCCA Division 2 Carnival. The students performed extremely well and came away with some very good results: Year 3 Year 4 Year 6 Thank you to Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Wild for attending the day and ensuring the day ran smoothly and safely.
Interschool Athletics Carnival On Friday 10 November selected students from Year 3-6 competed at the WACSSA Interschool Athletics Division 2 Carnival held at WA Athletics Stadium in Mt Claremont. The students performed exceptionally well. Outstanding results included: Year 3 Champion Boy went to Cooper who won all of his running events plus long jump and turbo javelin which was held on the Tuesday 7 November. Ben came 1st in his div 2 100m and 200m run. The Year 3 boys also came fist place in their 100m team relay. In Year 4 Summer was awarded Year 4 Runner-up Girl overall points. Summer placed 1st in her 200m and 100m A div run. The Year 6 boys and Year 6 girls did a fantastic job in their final athletics carnival. Radinka and Pearl competed in every event trying their best. The Year 6 boys won their 100m relay run and Josh was awarded the Champion Boy overall in Year 6 boys. Josh came first in the long jump and div 2 800m. In the 100m and 200m A div he came 3rd. Anthony won his 200m and 100m div 2 races and Kieran won the div 1, 800m run event. Out of nine schools Regent College placed 4th overall which is an improvement from previous years and a great result. The students should all feel very proud; they gave one hundred effort and represented their College very well. Thanks to Callum Barnes and Deanne Wild for helping on the day - their assistance was greatly appreciated. Also a big thank you to the parents and grandparents who cheered and supported the athletes. Mrs French Gelato Excursion On Wednesday 1 November, the Year 4 Italian class went for an excursion to Pietro Gelateria in East Victoria Park. Matthew Fleay who is the owner of the gelateria and previous student of Regent College, asked the children what gelato they wanted in Italian and they responded using their best Italian speaking skills. Besides having the best gelato ever, it was pleasing to see the children using words and phrases they had been learning in Italian lessons this term.
